Re: New Melones Limits - 5/8/13

Well, I had to LDR's and Tortuga caught 2 and lost a few. Fish Junky got his limit. Bit actually Tortuga and I ended up with a 19'er.

    We're buying Fish Junky's awesome Fish-rite!

I will be making a return trip for sure!

Ate the kokanee on Friday, super tasty! BBQ'd filets marinated in teriyaki. One of my favorite fish to eat now. Its like a salmon flavor without some of the game-i-ness and zero bones when cooked right.

I doubt you came close to exploring a quarter of the lake at all in one day. The lake and river itself running from the dam upriver is over 17 miles long. Its a wonderful place and I spend as much time as I can there. Glad you came up to check out the place. I'm sure you will be back for more since our Kokanee season is starting off better this year than the past two years, there are plenty more to catch. Great report also!

Fished the lake the first time in the mid 90's. Pulled bikini needlefish behind flashers on lead core. I've changed the lures and now run down riggers but the lake never fails to product something for me. That bikini needlefish is still used with great results as are all the newest and greatest lures. What a great fishery!

First trip ever! Nice lake, especially on that overcast day with zero wake. Didn't even explore a quarter of the waters, leaves more for a return visit.

Fish New Melones Limits - 5/8/13

Made my first trip to New Melones Lake yesterday and we had a blast!

On the water by 6:30am. Water temp was about 58 degrees and lake was at about 60% capacity.

Trolled pink hoochies behind flashers at 30 feet at 1.4mph. First hookup was at 7:30am - Kokanee!

Trolling throughout the rest of the morning resulted in a lot more rainbow trout than expected/desired. We threw back 5 rainbow trout before we started keeping them. By 10am we started trolling deeper to about 45-50 feet and getting a lot more hookups. To top it off, we almost quit at 13 thinking the bite was done by 1pm. We took one last shot and got a double hook up to finish the day out! Well worth sticking around.

By the end of the day, we ended up with 32 hookups, 22 landed, and 15 kept (8 Kokanee, 7 Rainbows).

All in all, I'd say my first trip to New Melones was a great success!
