Re: Black things in Crappie fillet?

If you have a sharp knife or way to cut into the 10 inch area in this picture............
you will hit the heart of the fish, to let it bleed out into a 5 gallon bucket, before putting it on ice.

Placed in lake water is not the best way to go if above 55 degrees, for extended times.
I do not stringer any fish in the summer time, when shore fishing.

"Blue ice" in a cooler is my option for quality fish, if ice is not available.
    Good fishing

My BFF (Wifey) showed me awhile ago that any fish we catch and cook gets wiped down with a combination of grapefruit and orange juice, it not only adds flavor any parasites will flee. If you didn't fillet all them contact DFG and they'll send someone out to pick it up for testing, but you'll have to know when, where the fish were hooked. Good luck my friend!

    HI: Guys

If those black lines "Freaked you out" try putting a rock fish filet in the sun for around 1/2 hr and watch the worms come out of the meat and do a "Dance". That will get your brain running overtime... The F/G Biologist at the Bodega Bay cleaning station said "they are normal, just make sure you cook it.

When I do a final count for limits I drain the bloody water and pump in fresh for the trip back to launch. The process also provides a quicker kill for the game. If you don't have a bait tank, an ice chest with icy water should work great.
This..... Slit thier gills and let them bleed out.

Agreed. Nothing to worry about. Pretty normal. Eaten hundreds of crappie like that!

They are just veins. I think the way they are handled and killed after being caught can exacerbate the problem. I would agree with those who suggested bleeding them.

Have you called the store or marina at Camanche for information?
