Re: Monterey Bay, Marina State Beach

Ok, nice weekend with the better half, on her birthday. She told me to bring the poles. Using my 8.5 ft, X11 spinning Steelhead rod. Throwing 1oz with a plastic slider, 24 inch 10lbs floro leader, size 2 hook, gulp sand worm. Total of 4 fish. All released. I found it was best 1.5 hours or more after high tide. Talked with guy next to me. Didn’t understand throwing back. He said the perch make great sashimi. Next time the soy sauce and wasabi will be with me.

When using those gulp sand worms its best to hold your rod in hand so you can feel the bite.Usually if they bite first time and miss they seem to know the difference from fresh and won't come back for a second hit. If your not getting bites move and up and the beach. Good luck

Got here about 4:00. Walked on the beach. A difinite trough and channel causing rip tide, in front of resort. Wife said men were fishing there when she was here in November with her sisters.

Sounds like a plan. Remember that the perch are not far out past the breakers. They will usually bite just past, in, or just short of the breaking waves. Look for changes in the break patterns and fish those areas harder. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Never fished there, but did "visit" it a couple of times during basic training at Fort Ord in early '71. Had my M-16 in hand and ended up with an "all expenses paid" tour of Vietnam :) . Was a long hike from the barracks to the beach and back... (usually followed by PT).

Never been there, but the camo sand worm setup has been a go to for surf perch in many locations up and down the California coast. Good luck!
