    Melones in the storm 5-16-18

Well we had a free day so we headed down to NM. Weather said maybe some scattered showers but then clearing. We wait til daylight to head down so we can see the weather...cloudy but calm with some dark stuff up north....we launch and head over to the west side to rig up. Caboom...thunder...a little away a slight flash of lightening, then rain. More thunder and we head back to the ramp. We unplug electronics make sure the antenna is down. Three boats sitting there waiting it out. It blew by quick. We're the last out and head to Rose to let the squall get farther away and be close to the dock.
We are really hunting for koke with the Murphy's LolliPop, Mag Tackle Mini, GVF's new dodger and spinner combo...Plum Purple? (I'll have to check the name) and I put out my chrome Apex and dodger. After a short cruise before we turn for the dam my Apex explodes...I grab it and tell Froggie.."This is not a koke". My line was stripping out like crazy! I'd gain 5 feet and lose 15...it was awesome. I haven't had a trout battle like this in a long time. On my 7 1/2 ft Vance's and little Abu 4601 it was quite the fight. After we do a couple of circles and think it's done 2 or 3 times Froggie net my pig...a gorgeous rainbow! About 25 inches and right at 6 pounds....man that was fun. We got a couple of pics but they don't show the color.

We finally head to the west side and head for the spillway. Froggie's LolliPop goes off and we think koke! It's shaking and triying to dive, we get it in the boat and nope...rainbow. Nice 16" bow...no skunk for either one of us.

We turn to do the reverse pass and her gold Apex goes next....another hard fighting shaking....rain bow. A fat 16 incher.

We keep on down the lake and wham my chrome Apex goes again!! Another line stripping, hard running, big fish fight...We finally get it in the boat. Another huge trout..over 20 inch, 4 pound hawg...man what a day!

That was it for the day. No kokanee but 4 trout and two of those were pigs! Today was my best trout day in months. A two fish ten pound stringer.

Froggie has some pics...but it's not fair. She got a couple nice trout...mine just made hers look little!

    See you out there,
    Tortuga
