Re: Melones 8-4 lots of little fun

My guess it was a male green sunfish or a hybrid. Used to catch 'em in creeks, dredger and swimming holes. Lake McSwain's swimming hole used to be full of them and a seasonal creek near LaGrange had them too.

They have bass like mouths and and yellow tipped fins. Some are real pretty with bright blue stripes on their gills.

Redeye bass. The never get big but are scrappy for their size. Melones had a large pop of them in the creeks around rocks and a lot of them on the face of the dam.

The color looks very much like the fish you had in the photo. However the body shape of the fish and your photo resembles a perch or bluegill. The fish I caught had the basic same color but was shaped more like a bass and his mouth opened up much larger than a perch or bluegills would have. That's really close though thank you for sharing

Years ago I caught a simialar fish, didn't know what it was and took it to UC Santa Cruz, they identified it as a "war mouth bass".

Sounds like you made the best of a smoked filled day with slow bass action. Most likely a crappie and good eats.

Melones 8-4 lots of little fun

Was that the Smoke Filled New Melones Lake this last weekend. The bass fishing was fairly slow they seem to be suspended.. I decided to have some fun catching perch and bluegill and a fish of Unknown Origin. I was casting a clear bobber with a fly about 3 foot from it to the banks in Brushy areas and nearly every cast I was catching something. It was fun they fight hard for their size. I did catch one fish similar to a perch but resemble something more like is smallmouth bass and it had bright blue streaks throughout its head. couldn't tell you what it was but its mouth was larger than those of the other perch. Its body shape was longer and narrower than that of a bluegill or perch with your kind of skinny and tall. It was hard to breathe it was really Smoky up there water temp was about 80 degrees on the surface. I also caught about a 3 lb catfish. It was a channel cat. Take it easy Stickman
