    Bodega Salmon-Whale show

My buddy from Grass Valley came over for a weekend of salt and to hopefully take home a cooler full of Sonoma’s finest. The Salmon bite has been good close to port for quite some time so we expected to do well on salmon and then get some rockfish. We trolled south from Tomales to Ten Mile for a couple scratches baits on Fri eve and decided to finish the evening on the rocks. Landed a few nice rocks and an 8# Ling along with a bonus Halibut below Bird rock at 9#. Saturday morning we got an early start and decided to go North to troll. We started relativity deep but apparently not deep enough. As we worked closer to shore we found som nasty brown water that we did not believe any fish would want to be in. After a few hours and nothing we called it to fish Fort Ross reef area for some other action. Lots of smaller rockfish at first until we got into our groove and quickly started finding some nice fish on the shallower reefs including a monster 19# Ling which my buddy showed mercy on and released safely. Received a small tip Sat eve regarding whales working krill deep and due west of Bodega Head. Make a trek approx 7 mile to a 300’ depth and put the rods down deep-120’ plus otw. 2 minutes and fish on. It was crazy fishing with many doubles until about 10 an when the bite slowed. At the end of the frenzy we started seeing the bird activity and spotted a large group of whales feeding on what I suspect was krill. Trolled around at a safe distance watching the show for some time, quite amazing. At one point we could smell the whales, not pretty. Ended the day early afternoon with 4 nice fish to 23# and my buddy had a full cooler to take Home.
