Hook Re: Examples of Striped Bass in the Delta on a Lowrance Sonar Unit

Cool. Good post Jack. I have a Hummingbird FF. Mine just shows gold fish symbols, some bigger than others. Once in a while Blue fish. I always think those are the biguns.LOL. I don't live or die on the FF. I always keep in mind it is sonar and could be picking up Crawdad pulses. However love it for structure and all the other reference info it gives me. I'd rather have it than not.

Most will tell you to have your sonar scroll speed the same as your travel speed. So if you are trolling at 3mph, have the scroll speed on the sonar at the 3 setting. This is simply a general rule of thumb, and overall, is sound advice. However, if you want elongated arches to better see fish returns, increase your sonar scroll speed so that it is more, or larger, than your travel speed. So if you troll at 3mph, try using a sonar scroll speed of 6. The bigger the difference, the larger the arches will be on the screen.

The opposite reasoning applies as to why you don't see big arches when you are on plane. The boat speed is much larger than the scroll speed of the sonar, reducing the size of all returns.

Cliff notes version: If your sonar scroll speed is more than your travel speed, you'll see better fish arch definition.

This was San Francisco Bay. As soon as the screen lit up with fish we started pulling out 18 to 22 striper.

great post, a while back i thought about creating a thread where members could post snapshots of things they see on their sonar that they could not decipher, and ask the community for help on it. i've been staring at my sonar for years and still have trouble making out what i am looking at.
