Re: Baby sturgeon spotted at UCD today
I worked at UCD for 15 years back around the time Abraham Lincoln was still chopping firewood. The sturgeon program was always interesting and I spent a fair amount of time out there chatting with the researchers. At one time I tested some of the first ultrasonic lures that were put out by a guy in Montana. I lowered the lures into the tanks where the mature sturgeon were and took video of the reaction of the fish. They were definitely attracted by the sound but I was never able to catch anything on those lures. Anyway, the sturgeon program has been going on for decades there and they are a big resource for fish farmers. The UCD fisheries program always used to have a nice setup at the state fair in Cal Expo but it has been years since I last went

UCD does quite a bit of research on farmed and wild sturgeon. They also have tanks with large green sturgies for scientific analysis and research.
I suspect these are young farmed sturgeon for research. I was invited there a couple times to show the profs and students how to clean sturgeon. We had to kill about 30-35 young farmed fish for analysis of biological differences related to chromosomes.
I never cleaned so many sturgeon at one time in my life! It was an educational and interesting experience.

You guys need to clean out your drains if sturgeon are backing up in the tub.
Research project I'm assuming?
Cool to see.
