    Re: Walnut Grove 9/21

I love the thrill of salmon fishing, I'm not very good at it and I've gone home on many trips with an empty cooler, but it is an awesome feeling watching them surface and you see that chrome. The reason I don't target salmon as much as I would like isn't so much the likely hood that I will come home empty handed, it's more because of the fact that I hate dealing with the hoards of people on the water. It can be like mad max out there sometimes, and my life is hectic enough as it is. I don't want to be out there dealing with all of the crowds and all of the knuckleheads out there.

We where out there last Sunday. Lots of boats and never seen a net fly. We did see a darker fish hanging on a boat though. We trolled from Geargianna down to the Ryde hotel.

The docks and shore was lined with 20-30 casters and at least 30 boats were working this part of the river trolling, with a few even jigging (not too common in this area). Made a few passes from the bridge down to Ko-Ket trolling a silvertron but saw nothing on the sonar nor were any nets flying. With this many people out, someone should be getting something. Later in the morning, I finally marked a few schools of fish and thought we would hook up but nada. Finally around 10am, my rod starts pumping and we are hooked up. Fight the fish for about 5 min before we get him into the net: nice 13-14lb silver male with a few sea lice. Continue fishing the area for another 2-3 hours for nothing.

Water temp was 63-64 (cooler than normal for this time of the year) and the water was clear of any debris. Lots of boat traffic but everyone seem to work around each other. Weird thing, no one I talked too, boaters and shore people, had caught anything nor did I see any one with a net out besides us. Feel very lucky but I was just doing what I normally do.

There are some fish in the system, just don't know why they are not biting or why others aren't catching

I launched out of Viera on 9-21. I was on the water by 6 am, and off about 12ish. Started out in the morning just North of the Rio Vista Bridge. I saw one dude get a smaller salmon. Must have been about 50-75 boats in that small area. IT was packed, not fun, a ton of morons crossing people lines, dude yelling at each other, it was a joke. A lot of fish on the finder though. We said screw that...we went further up the river, between Viera's and Isleton bridge. I found two other boats with success. First boat had 4 dudes in it, one salmon (caught near Viera's) and the second boat had 3 dudes, 3 fish, all from the Rio Vista Area. Nothing Huge. Everyone else we spoke to got skunked, including us.

As I said, there were a ton of a fish on the finder, especially on the east side of the river. Once we left Rio Vista and started up the Sac, they disappeared off the finder.

Same deal upriver from where you fished. We got one, saw only one other hooked. Off day for sure.

Same thing further upriver. Some are saying the fish are 1-1.5 months late this year?
    Here they come!
