    Re: Trolling in the Afternoon?

On Tuesday , I launched at Miller Park starting at noon until 5:30 pm, and trolled from Sandy Beach downstream to the Sacramento Yacht Club a few times. I saw tight lines guide service and a lot of sport boats fishing, but I only heard about one fish caught until after 5pm.
Then about 5pm as I'm getting ready to wrap things up so I can put the boat away before dark (45 minute drive home), I start seeing salmon roll. Then I see a 12 foot aluminum boat launch and they start jigging next to me about 5:15pm. They hooked up and landed a salmon within 5 minutes. Then the net boy puts the net down, and starts jigging, and hooks another salmon within 30 seconds. They landed that one and after 7 minutes of fishing they had two salmon on board.
After that I jig for about 20 minutes, and didn't catch anything. But they didn't either. I have to guess they were just incredibly lucky, because I didn't see anyone else get anything all afternoon except for that one fish until they caught those 2.
However, when I kept my boat at Riverbank Marina, I would go there after work in the afternoons, and catch plenty of salmon.
To sum it up, get your butt out there and fish in the afternoons!

    Re: Trolling in the Afternoon?

I think there is an hour or so at first light that has a benefit mainly of just quieter water that's been calm for several hours, but after that, I don't think it matters. Several writers and guides recommend late afternoon and evening as a trick to dealing with heavy fishing pressure. I've fished the Klamath with 100 boats lined up at the ramp at daylight, and 5 in the lot in the evening. Evening on the river is my favorite time of day anyway.

Works just fine! Been doing pretty well in the afternoons lately, way less boats out.
    Here they come!

    Trolling in the Afternoon?

Has anyone tried and have success trolling in the afternoon (in the Sac area)?

Trolling in the morning can be crazy sometimes with all the boat traffic. I have caught fish one time in the afternoon (about 2 to 3pm) but most of my trolls have been in the morning. Just wondering if anyone tried and have success.
