Exploring the East Cape
Hotel Punta Colorada

Fishing Report

Beautiful Dorado caught Sixth in a series in which I review some of the hotels and the fishing at the East Cape.

The Hotel Punta Colorada is located 8 kilometers south of the sleepy town of La Ribera and is situated on a 5 or 6 kilometer uninterrupted beach. The hotel is operated by Eddie Van Wormer and is part of a family operated business owned by Robert Van Wormer which includes the Hotel Palmas de Cortez and the Playa del Sol.

The staff at the hotel are mostly English speaking and they are very friendly and courteous. While staying at the Hotel Punta Colorada, you are provided with 3 meals per day. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style, sack lunch is provided for anglers while guests who are not fishing are served in the dining room or can eat al fresco outside the dining room.

Hotel Punta Colorada The hotel also has an inside and an outside bar for your convenience (I might add the bar serves delicious ceviche in the afternoons.) In addition to fishing, snorkeling, beach combing, kayak rentals, a fresh water swimming pool is available for the guests.

In the last two years, things certainly changed for the better at the Hotel Punta Colorada with the addition of the 10 spacious suites. This brings their total rooms count to 42. The spacious suites boast one queen size and two twin size beds, a small refrigerator to keep beverages cold, tiled floors throughout, a ceiling fan or air conditioning for your comfort as well.

In February, 2004, they launched a new loading dock. Which will greatly increase the safety when boarding and unloading from the cruisers and pangas (but the old flavor of wading out to a panga to be ferried to the cruisers will be sorely lost).

Hotel Punta Colorada The fishing fleet consists of 28' cruisers, 28' super cruisers and pangas. The fleet manager is Alejandro who is most helpful with your fishing needs.

Rates for the hotel are $55 per day standard room per person, suites are $80 per day per person. Boat rental ranges from $300 per day to $400 per day (all rates do not include tax).

In conclusion, the hotel is located right at one of the most productive fishing grounds in the Sea of Cortez. Friendly staff, good food, reasonable prices. Because it is located in the middle of nowhere, this is a fantastic place if you just want to fish, relax and want to be away from the main stream of tourism.

Fishing Report

Hotel Punta Colorada Group trip May 16-23 included 3 days of fishing and 3 days of relaxation. Total tallies were 12 Striped Marlin to 200 lbs., 4 Dorado to 45 lbs., 30 Tuna to 40 lbs. 25 Triggerfish, 5 Pargo and 3 Pompano.

The entire trip the seas were calm with a light breeze. Temperatures in the daytime low 90s, evenings low 70s. Water temperatures ranged from 76 to 83. Water clarity was fantastic!
