Dear "Fish Sniffer",
Just wanted to write a short note. I am currently in the Persian
Gulf on board the USS KITTY HAWK, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.
The fishing here in the Persian Gulf is alive and well. On the USS
Independence our XO landed a 6 foot sailfish just a couple days before my
trip. In the winter, I've been told it is not uncommon to catch 15-25 sails
in a day. I myself caught a 55-60 pound cobia while fishing with Bigfoot
charters in Dubai.
Every time we pull into Bahrain or Jebel Ali, I'm on the pier
fishing. The bottomfishing is good enough to keep me out there nearly every
day. I've caught saltwater catfish, smaller barracuda, a nice 15 pound
trevally on a sabiki rig for baitfish, stingrays, sharks, queenfish, sea
bream, and numerous other fish that I would be hard pressed to find names
for. It isn't as glorious as catching tuna or sailfish from a boat, but it
is nice, relaxing fun.
It has been over three years since I left Northern California and
the wonderful fishing in the delta, but it is still where my heart is. I
used to get the chance to fish with Barry Canevaro quite a bit, and still
keep in touch with him. I'd help out at the sport and boat shows as a
teenager whenever given the chance. So I've met a few of the staff from the
Fish Sniffer, and even though I doubt they'd ever remember me, I figured I'd
drop a line and say "Thank You". It is great being able to get on the
internet and see what is happening back home, when you are half way across
the world.
