New Melones Lake offered anglers participating in the 2nd Annual Invitational Kokanee Tournament, sponsored by Project Kokanee on July 9, fair to good fishing with fish averaging 1 to 1-1/2 pounds, according to CIFFI President, Rod Browning.
Anglers fished the south side of the lake near Rose Island, off the Tuttletown Recreation Area, and near Glory Hole Point, 50 to 70 feet deep in 100 to 200 feet of water. According to Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sports, the most productive lures were hot pink or red sparkle Apex, pink Hoochies, Uncle Larry's spinners, and kokanee bugs trolled behind dodgers or Sling Blades.
The top 10 of the 100 participants went home with prizes and cash. Mike Ramirez of Nevada City won first place with his combined 2 fish limit of 61 ounces. Ramirez trolled an Uncle Larry's Spinner with a dodger for his winning total. Ramirez received a check for $1,200, along with $325 for the big fish award.
