Fishing Notes:
Smallmouth Bass fishing on the North Fork of the American River kicks off in early May and extends through October. The period from the last week of May through the middle of July represents the peak time to visit the river. At this time the flows are typically manageable, large fish will have migrated up from Folsom Lake, and the bass will be spawning in slack water areas. The best lures to use are Rapalas, small Zara Spooks, Rebel crawdad crankbaits and a variety of plastic grubs on leadheads.
While spinning tackle represents the most efficient way to fish the North Fork, it is also a great place to get started using a fly rod for bass. A 8'6" to 9 foot 5 to 7 weight rod will do the job nicely. Fly selection need not be extensive. A couple deer hair frogs or mice, some size 4 black wooly buggers, and a couple size 6 muddler minnows are all the flies that you'll need.
Even if you're not using a fly rod, it is a good idea to carry a few subsurface flies for use with your spinning rod. To fish them simply tie them to the end of your line and add enough split shot for easy casting. Cast the flies upstream of likely holding areas and work them with a stop and start twitching action. It is surprising how many fish can be tempted with a subsurface fly that will not grab a conventional lure.
The section of river between the confluence with the Middle Fork and Clementine Dam is also home to a good population of redear sunfish and bluegill that provide good action on flies and marabou jigs. For maps and train information, call the Auburn State Recreation Area at 530-885-4527.
