South San Francisco Bay
San Francisco/Alameda/San Mateo Counties
Fishing Notes:
Leopard Sharks: Leopards are the South Bay's most prolific gamefish. They can be taken on a variety of baits fished from both boats and the bank. The best shark fishing occurs between the months of May and October.
Striped Bass: There are a few stripers in the South Bay all the time, but the best action occurs between April and June before the fish head out to coastal beaches. When they return from the beaches in September, South Bay anglers can expect another good shot of bass action from the beginning of September through the latter part of October. Both bait fishing and plugging are reliable ways to tempt stripers.
Halibut:
Halibut start showing up in the late spring and they typically continue to show in the catches until early fall. Trolling and drifting with live baits are both effective approaches for catching halibut.
Sturgeon: Sturgeon are present in the strongest numbers during the period between early December and the end of March. The bite is best in years that feature a strong herring spawn, but quality diamondbacks show in the catches every winter whether or not a herring spawn occurs.
