Guide to California Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations* for 2001

SUMMARY OF REGULATIONS

GEAR RESTRICTIONS

When rockfish of lingcod are aboard or in possession not more than 2 hooks and one line are allowed per person. A hook can be a single, or a double or treble hook with multiple points connected to a common shank.

BAG AND POSSESSION LIMITS

Within the general bag and possession limit of 20 fish per day, the angler may take up to 10 rockfish in any combination. The following species though have different individual limits;

  • Bocaccio = 2
  • Cabezon = 10
  • CA Sheephead = 5
  • Canary rockfish = 1
  • Cowcod = 0
  • Lingcod = 2

AT-SEA FILLETING REGULATIONS:

Rockfish fillets must have the entire skin attached. Fillets from all other species allowed below must have a least a 1" patch of skin. Rock and kelp greenlings, and cabezon may NOT be filleted at sea.

AREA CLOSURES

waters between Cape Mendocino in Humbolt County and Point Conception will be closed for deeper water rockfish and lingcod between March 1 and June 30, except that fishing will be allowed for nearshore rockfish species during May and June in waters less than 20 fathoms in depth.

*These regulations are effective as of January 3, 2001 in federal waters from 3 miles to 200 miles offshore, and will become effective in state waters for 0 to 3 miles once they are approved. You may visit the DFG web site at www.dfg.ca.gov or call 1-800-766-9124 for additional details.

 
Limits are to be included in the General Daily Bag and Possession Limits as Detailed in Section 27.60 in the Regulations*

ROCKFISH

The rockfish bag limit is 10 per day in any combination of species, except that special; limits for the three rockfish pictured below are to be included in the 10 per day.

Bocaccio

 
Bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) Upper jaw extends behind eye. Bag limit 2 per day, minimum size limit 10" total length.

 

 
Canary Rockfish

 
Canary rockfish (Sebastes pinniger) Orange color, lateral line in clear gray zone. Bag limit 1 per day. No size limit.

 

 
Cowcod

 
Cowcod (Sebastes levis) Bag limit 0 per day.

Note: Over 60 species of rockfish live in California Waters. Consult a field guide to learn how to identify them.

 

 
OTHER FISHES

Cabezon

 
Cabezon (Scorpaenichthys marmoratus) Bag limit 10 per day, size limit 15" total length, may not be filleted at sea.

 

 
California Scorpionfish

 
California Scorpionfish (Scorpaena guttata) Also known as sculpin. Bag limit 10 per day, size limit 10" total length, fillet length 5".

 

 
California Sheephead

 

 

 
California Sheephead (Semicossyphus pulcher) Bag limit 5, size12" total length.

 

 
Kelp Greenling

 

 

 
Kelp Greenling (Hexagrammos decagrammus) Bag limit 10 per day, size limit 12" may not be filleted at sea.

 

 
Rock Greenling

 
Rock Greenling (Hexagrammos superciliosus) Bag limit 10 per day, size limit 12" total length, may not be filleted at sea.

 
Lingcod

 
lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) Bag limit 2 per day, size limit 26" total length, fillet length 18".
