The small steelhead, cleared the surface and cartwheeled four feet out of the water as we hit the fast water right below launch. I managed to get and keep the fish within about 10 feet of the boat, and my balance until we reached the calmer water of the "Forks". The steelhead took off on one last run. As the fish got close to the boat I gave it some slack and shook my rod. The barbless hook popped out of it's mouth and the fish swam away.
First cast, fishon, the Smith always has a surprise for you. A beautiful sunny day, clear water, and steelhead in the river. Life just doesn't get any better. I was fishing with survey contest winner Luana Johnson, on her first steelhead trip, and guide Dan Carter. With an exciting start to the day, we all expected plenty of action.
Dan methodically worked the water, fishing line after line through each hole. I got a short take at Douglas Park, reeled in and saw those embarrassing little teeth marks in my puffball. Luana had a take at the Gage Hole which actually bent her rod but the fish spit the hook as she attempted to set.
