On September 18th, we were fortunate enough to be invited to participate in the Project Kokanee Derby at Emerald Cove Marina on Bullards Bar Reservoir by Dick Pool, of Scotty Downriggers and Pro-Troll Lures.

Richard was paired with Dick, and I was paired with Doug Pyburn, his head sales executive. It was an overcast day, so the temperature was comfortable instead of 100 as had been predicted.

Both boats were rigged with Scotty electric downriggers and Black Boxes, which attracts fish to your downrigger wire by controlling a very slight positive electric charge on the wire. (We'll be doing a product review soon on this item)

Doug rigged up the lines with copper dodgers and watermelon Kokanee Killers tipped with long-kernaled white corn, dropped three lines down, turned on the black box, set the troll to 1.2mph and bam! We hit! While we were netting that one, bam! Another one hit! And so it went all day for Doug and I.

Richard and Dick weren't quite as successful, but Doug told me Dick's black box was on the blink and his boat emits the wrong kind of ions... (yeah, right Doug)

But by the end of the day, Doug and I had not only limited out, we had caught and released numerous fish throughout the day. Unfortunately our biggest was not even close to winner Scott Bartosh's 15.9 ouncer. But that was okay.

Who's to say if it was the black box or Doug's expertise, but one way or the other, my smoker was going for the whole day after, as we ended up with all four limits! Thanks guys!
