[left]So I went on a last minute trip to the Farallons on Saturday, for probably the most exciting consistent fishing of my life!

Headed out at 6.30am with just me and my best buddy, Scott. We stopped in the channel just west of the GG bridge to try and jig up some bait - no joy. Headed directly out to the main island, lots of wildlife, dolphins, seals etc. When we got to the main island, we saw this huge feeding frenzy and bait ball:

Dropped down gear - no hits.

We fished around the eastern side of the main island for one medium grade olive, but nothing to write home about. We decided to head out to the pimple, on the way in the middle of nowhere, I pick up a little 'hump' on the sonar, with some fish hanging over it so we decide to give it a try...

Off the hook, for the rest of the day. We had two rods with doubles on every single drop, with quality blacks and olives. We had the rods in the water no more than 10 seconds before hooking up with doubles. We even had them boiling on the surface:

Double catch - single hook!

It really got insane - we had to take turns to take breaks and we really had to grade our fish - nothing under 17 inches *:o If you know rockfish, this was okay to do as most of the fish were blacks - they are pretty hardy and seem to be able to survive much better than reds and some of the other species.

These guys were so aggressive, one olive actually hammered my weight :P

Anyway, after a while we wanted to hit some lings and we simply could not get the gear down far enough before hooking up - even trying for a hitchhiker *;) We motored about a mile away and dropped down onto sand before drifting back on the bottom. The result? Six drifts, six lings (four keepers) and one sand dab;

Sand Dab:

Lings:

All in all a fantastic day, we even had a humpbacked visitor hang around the boat most of the day;

Very nice, calm waters too;

So we eventually got done cleaning fish by 1am on Sunday morning - guess what I had for dinner? ROCKFISH TACOS!!!!

Very nice JP. That was a monster sand dab. My last trip to the islands I went on a party boat and took my friend with me and all he kept saying is that those were not fish they were aliens, because they would bite on a bare hook. Awsome fishing, thanks for the pics. Hope to go on a trip with you soon.

Nice looking fish and a great looking day out there. Nice to see your new boat on your signature she's sweet. I made fish tacos out of our last catch also. I even ate 4 of them and I don't eat fish.
Hey Jonny when you going to post up the pic of Tom's gaint rock?

So where at the Farralons is it not legal to fish? I know some of the area there is a sanctuary right? Id like to head out there with Tattoofish but I wanna make sure we're in the up & up? What abouts are the #'s for the pimple? I know thats open.

Hey JonnyP,
I was out there also on Saturday and got to experience the crazy black and olive bite. To weed through the small ones try tying a single 5 inch swim bait on light bass tackle instead of using a double shrimp fly set up. Much more fun and you won't limit out in 10 mins. You weren't kidding about the bare hooks working. It was nuts.

For lings try using the dabs for bait, that all we used for the lings and hooked some nice ones.

Mike: As for the legal fishing spots, you need to watch your depth. Its not the distance you are from the islands its the depth you are drifting over and any spot shallower than 60 is off limits. As for the numbers at the pimple, I don't have them off hand, but if you look at it on a map it is a tiny spot of land right in the middle between the north and the south islands.

Good advice mate, I actuallt switched to a single pink swimbait toward the end of the day and ended up with a couple of quality reds and a Ling...
