Took my wife to HMB for a morning of good rockfishing. *Easy limits as usual, but no keeper lings or bonus halibut this time. *We caught 6 shaker lings, with 5 of them measuring 23 inches!

We also caught a few canaries. *This time I took a picture for those who have not caught a canary. *The canary is on the right:

My wife also hooked a handsize octopus. *It actually tried to eat the live anchovy. *I've heard that they are one of the best baits for lings, so I gave it a try. *A few minutes after dropping it, it managed to climb into a hole. *I was unable to retrieve it and snapped the line.

Our catch included 2 vermilion over 6lbs. *If the fish look small, it's because the cooler is 100 qts.

Nice catch. The octopus is good eating too. Next time if you catch one give it a few punches in the head untill it stops moving and then drop it down. I caught a couple of those octopus in croatia last year but we ate them. they taste good on the grill.

Thanks guys. That octopus was very lively. Next time, I'll give it a whack on the head. It clung to everything, so it took a while before I was able to lower into the water. Powerful tentacle suctions for such a small critter.

I thought you were not suppose to take canaries out of the water as they are endangered.

oops. *Just saw this.

There is no rule that says you cannot take them out of the water. *It's ideal, but not the case. *You can use barbed hooks for rockfish if you don't have any salmon aboard. *And most people take the fish out of the water to remove the hooks.

What about using dead octopus for bait I see them at the flea market alot, would they be cut up simular to squid?

You can use dead octopus, I'm pretty sure it would work. They sell baby octopus at the fish store and also you can find them at Safeway sometimes. I would use it whole.
