We were thinking of heading to Tomales Bay to do a little fishing, but wanted to find out if, generally speaking, it's more or less a waste of time. I rarely see people talking about it on this board.

Thanks much.

Fished Tomales Bay half a day yesterday after hearing of a few nice hali's comin outta there. Caught our bait in the morning along the grassbeds and made several drifts for nada.. looked to be about the same for the other 6 boats out there.. that's about all I have to say about that! Another bay, another day!

fished tomles sunday did not see any one catch anything . The wife and I fished sharks all day . she got 4 nice lepords. Then I noticed my chum line straight out the to the side so I pull on the rope slow and i can feel something there i pull. Then i see color and holy crap I can't believe what I see It comes up to side of the boat at least 9 ft. long or more 7 gill . he has my chum basket in his mouth. he lets go of the basket I drag it around and he chases and bites at the basket .Then he dives and the tail comes up and just about takes my head off! So I drop the chum back down 1 min later the rope starts moving again so I pull up the again and again he comes up to the boat .then he dives again down goes the basket . This time I baited my rod with a large bait so this time I will put this out to him . Then the rope starts again to move . pull on rope and he pulls back and cut rope at basket . So rod goes in about 20 min tip starts to wiggle . pick up rod went to set hook rod went double the fight was on for about 3 mins spit it out . Still had bait so lowered it back down 45 mins the tips moves again this time I teased him more then the rod loaded up and this time the battle was on after a few min as luck would have it the damn out drive is in the spot the line wraps around it so over the back I go . got line on wraped and back in bussiness then he made a great jump. after 4 trips to the side of boat I won .!!!! Cut leader as close as I could to those teeth and blow him a kiss good bye until next time !!

You're crazy, FenceMan. Either this is a BIG fish story or you have a death wish. I have Tom Stienstra's book, The Complete Guide to California Fishing. This book has short but meaningful information on about 800 fishing spots in California. His treatment of Tomales Bay ends with a story about a shark biting a propeller off a boat in Tomales Bay. Please tell me exactly where you were. I want to fish Tomales Bay but I want to avoid a close encounter with any sharks. Thank-you.

They are a kick in Butt !! The wife wants to fish for them every weekend . *7 are a bottom feeder *. There is no report of man being biten but do have the teeth . But I'am saying they will not bite . I was at Lawson's Landing about 25 years ago, and a great white shark ate a harbor seal on the surface just off the fishing dock for all to see, so there is more in the bay than just sevengills and leopards. *Be careful!!

Back to halibut fishing, a friend of mine fished Tomales last Thursday and Friday using live bait and caught three halibut over 20 pounds, two inside the Bay and one on the bar.

I am no expert, but I was told that Tomales is a great-white nursery certain times of the year. I have no idea when those certain times are :o ;) ;D
