View Full Version : South Bay shark report 8/26

Hit the Alameda rockwall area agin with the same crew.
Water flat calm with overcast skies in the am, turning to beautiful sunshine and lots of wind by early/mid afternoon. Typical SF bay.
I started the day with a massive takedown from something BIG that headed straight out and would not turn. Snapped my line(30#) like nothing. Then I hooked a nice leopard shark running around 50" that came unbuttoned at the stern. I had another big hit. Other than that, it was undersize *city for kromebrite. The other two guys brought in two, 47"and 50". They had a lot of excellent takedowns and great hook-ups, but unfortunately there were many rookie errors happening on our boat today ::) Braid breaking, knots loosening, drags being set too tight etc etc. The fish were certainly cooperative. *Only a couple of rays this trip brought into the boat. Used sardines and squid. The fish went nuts over the "combo plate" of a chunk of squid and a half of sardine. Saw several big sturgeon jump out of the water at the rockwall this morning. There was speculation that my first huge takedown and the subsequent *line peeling may have been a sturg, but I'm not sure they eat sardine. I think it was a giant ray.
I finally caught my own bait today, which was rewarding. I hooked up a live bait hook and a medium size shiner to try for some striper but no takers.

Mr. M with a nice shark
Me with my typical catch of the day ;) ;D( of course released!)
Mr H with his keeper. Had to do the small size due to margin cut-off.

Nice Eric!! good report ;D About sturgies not eating sardines,I didnt think they would eat a live jumbo minnow but thats what I caught a 68" on a few years ago ;D

Last time I was there I had the thing saw the sturgeon jumping caught many small butts and had 1 fish take me for a ride for 15 mins than lost it. I also wonderd if it was the sturgeon.
