So decided to try a new lake for my last day of fishing for 2012, Woodward is about 50 min from my new house and I never been so got up at 6:30 am packed up my rods, de iced my car and loaded up my fishing buddy and headed out. Arrived at lake around 8:00 am or so, paid my $10 entrance fee for me and $3 fee for my fishing buddy and I was in

Headed towards the back of the lake and found the dam, wanted to mostly explore today so was planning on not doing to much bait fishing, started chucking a #7 purpledesent rapala shad rap that my best friend gave me, really wanted to catch something on it since she claims she is bad fishing luck and murmured something about not getting me anymore because of said bad luck lol. But alas nothing hit it today, I suspect water was a bit to cold for the size of the lure.

Switched to a pink tailed white headed powermouse and started walking, WALKing and WALKING, just exploring and casting. Around 11 am fish on! Fish starts taking line and running like crazy, I know I have a nice fish on and play it out. Minute later I have this beautiful fully finned holdover. Really debated about keeping this guy but wanted to try a new recipe and day was going slow so bonked and bled and onto the stringer he goes. Ohh weirdly when I landed him his eye fell out! It was all crusty and appeared to be from a old wound.

Switched back to rapala for another half an hour but nothing so back to the same color powermouse and around 11:35 I get another hook up and 5 seconds later it comes off, ohh well thats the way it goes sometimes. Another hook up at around 11:50 and land a decent planter.

Around this time I am freezing to death and wind is HOWLING so I hide behind a fallen tree with my dog for a half a hour and just rest a little and bait fish with nightcrawlers I dug up but no love on them.

fishing buddy!

Switch back to same color powermouse and continue my exploring and around 1:30 hook up into another fish, gives me a good fight, planter for sure but not from recent plants guessing he came from plants from the beginning of the year and spent the summer here.

Unhook him cast out and bam! another fish! back to back cast yeah! Land this guy and its a hook jam male, another planter despite his hooked jaw. You can see the pink powerworm in his mouth.

Continue to walk and cast but that's it for the day, try a glow orange sparkle powermouse and bait fishing with garlic powereggs and also a worm under bobber for a little while but can't find my limit. Day was COLD and windy but all that walking kept me warm, my poor dog was exhausted and slept all the way home gotta remember that she is 8 years old and not a young pup anymore. Left around 3:30, had a great day of solitude in a new lake and couldn't think of a better way to put a end to my 2012 fishing year. Can't wait to see what 2013 will bring!

Final tally:

Lake was low and muddy, kinda what I expected, sank ankle deep into mud a few times ohh did I mention it was cold?

If you ever see a handsome guy fishing and walking around with a black dog, that's not me. But I also walk and fish with a black dog with a docked tail so if you see me feel free to say hi.

Great report and pic's. Have driven past Woodward many times on my way to the valley, but have never fished it. I've read about the Powermouse being an effective lure at Amador, and have even seen them prepacked in tackle shops, but have never used them.

Maybe I should start!

That was a great read, thanks for the detailed report!

Great report....I'd imagine you probably had the lake to yourself but after that report don't be suprised to have some company out there with you next time.

You said the lake was 50 min from the house & you live in Salida? Did you walk? LOL

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Glad to see you got out and found some. Woodward was drained and fished were removed so not a lot of fish. Lots of skunks there, and the Sheriff will mess with ya if you have beer. Plus tweakers stay in the rv part over the winter and the ride their bikes around the lake looking for stuff to steal, plus lots of rattlesnakes

Hahah not to worried about crowds, they will disappear after they go and don't catch much. Didn't even have a fantastic day (4 fish in 7 hours isn't very good lol), if people want to put in miles I did today walking around and observing then they are earned their fish, but I suspect someone who does that can and already does catch fish in these lakes. These valley lakes are harsh mistresses, fishing can and is tough, why do think they aren't very popular even though they are so close to large population centers? No easy fishing here.

That's what map quest told me it was lol.
