Down at Cabo San Lucas and the East Cape region, their very close relatives the Jack Crevalle are fairly common. In Southern California, yellowtail are more distantly related members of the jack family. Up in NorCal, another distant relative, the Jack mackerel [aka horse mackerel or spanish mackerel] are occasionally caught while albacore fishing, and during warm water periods, a very few yellowtail are caught under floating kelp paddies out on the albacore grounds.
