Met with a few folks for a couple of days fishing on Pyramid shore. The weather was cold with lots of snow around the lake. The fishing was not red hot but was steady with everyone getting fish. We ended up with around 60 fish between the 8 of us. The fish were of a good size with the biggest being an new PB Trout for Mariahpup. A 11.9 pound shore monster that he brought in on 6# test. Congratulations Bill. We spent the night at Crosbys where we had dinner and drinks and were fishing by 0630 each morning. Did say it was cold? BigB, Geezer2 and Okie dropped by for awhile. Folks it was good to see and fish with you all again. A good way to start the year. I'll let pictures tell the story.

The story has been told so I will just say some things about the pics. Was a wonderful time out there with the fellow Sniffers. We all went from being familiar with one another reading reports to eight of us crammed into a cozy cabin fishing in 17º weather and not one time did I see anyone frustrated with a single sole. Great time all around.

Gorgeous sunrise in very cold weather.

And our new local buddy Andre did the excellent net job. He ran to his truck for the bigger net since mine was on the small side. Really good guy that also built us a fire. Our small contribution to him was saving a spot for him the next day. Thanks Andre!!!

Kevin worked HARD and was the only one without a fish on the first day. He and I called, "Last cast" and threw our rods out to let them sink and organized our stuff to take back to the car. He starts reeling in and THANK GOD he hooked into a fish to beat the skunk. Here he is with the bendo!

Did I mention it was cold? We used the ice chest to keep the cold OUT!!!! I had Kevin get me a soda from my ice chest. He said it felt warm but that is because it was well below freezing outside. He set it down for me and I took about 10 min to get to it. When I opened it, it froze and I had to put it between my sweatshirt and jacket to melt it to drink!!!!

I think it's about time for me to make my first trip up there from the bay area. Hopefully next weekend the weather will cooperate. All the fantastic pics are getting me stoked for the trip. If someone could let me me know what a popular ounce spoon is for this lake I can figure out the rest.

Thanks for the great trip and camaraderie, guys!! The cold never felt so good and chicken fried steak never tasted so good. Kevin, way to persevere and land that 6+ pound Cutt after 10 hours without a bite! It was great to meet you in person. Shane (my second son by virtue of time spent at our house), glad you got your first Pyramid trip under your belt (and sorry about the numb feet!). Jake, I am proud of the fine young man you are becoming--way to fish hard! Doug, you are a one-man party, and with photography skills to boot! Ken, I am glad you chose the Pyramid trip over skiing! Richard, you are the glue that holds it all together. Always a pleasure to fish with you. And finally, Bill, congrats again on catching the biggest cut I have ever seen in person :worthy::

At last a note from Mariahpup...to all my fishing buddies I can only say a big time thanks for a grand time...the trip will always hold special memories that go far beyond catching a big fish...fishing with my son Ken and just spending the time with him is very special to me...but spending the time with Richard,Doug,Paul,Jake,Shane, and Kevin was a priceless memory as well...Meeting Andre, a local, great fisherman and all around great guy was a big bonus.. .. the memory of the HOT CHOCOLATE that Kevin brewed on the shoreline on his litttle stove will hold a warm place as well...I hope we can hook up again a little later in the season for another shot at Pyramid...truly our friendships reach far beyond just the fishing...I hope other Sniffers are as lucky to have friends like mine...
A final note to Kevin...for the HOT CHOCOLATE..no more floor for you buddy...
Thanks to all for the pics...
To other SNIFFERS...my big fish was released (as well as all the others) and he and his buddies are swimming free out there at Pyramid just waiting for you...go get em!!!
Luck to All Mariahup

Yep, why? Was it yours? LOL (I know it's not). It had the triangle holes from a can opener all around the top. Someone must of used it for chum. Bait is illegal at that lake and just the fact that they littered makes them a looser. IMO

Ok so this fish had a tag in it and I just got the call from the place today. They said it was a pilot peak fingerling planted in the spring of 2010 at a place called cattleguard and only 6.5 inches long. It grew 22" in less than 3 years. They also said there are over 330,000 tagged pilot peak fish out there, and they have been planting them since 06' so there are surely 20+ lbrs swimming around out there!! Go get boys!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info Kevin. These fish are indeed special. I know of a couple of these fish caught over 20 pounds. The biggest 24 pounds. They will get bigger than this.

No joke there RNP. When they discovered the tag Kevin held it in the water so it could breath. He was reading off the numbers and I said it was a good thing he was doing that. Someone would have to grab my reading glasses out of the backpack. No bifocals though my sight is 20/20 after an arms length.

So, Kevin’s fish was of the 2009 year class and the 20+ lbs.ers caught recently are no older than the 2005 year class (7.5 years old)? The Truckee basin strain can live to 16 years…we will have to wait at least 8 more years to see the return of the strain reach it’s full potential in the modern Pyramid Lake?

No bait allowed, artificial barbless.. flies and lures, think big! The crosby lodge has an awesome selection of stuff that works there! If I go back Im digging through the salmon box and trying a few things. Seems the bankers have been doing well on the south side of the lake recently. Good luck and let us all know how you do, dont be one of those who asks for help then never lets us know how they do!!
