Hi all,

I have been trying to book a squid charter, and wondering if anybody has had any recent reports or good experiences with a charter? I called Emeryville sport fishing and the New Salmon Queen said the squid aren't running right now so I'm assuming this is the same for the half moon bay charters...aka....huli cat and new captain pete. Im going to check back weekly with them in hopes for the squid run to start and will post what I find out.

Anybody catch any squid this year?

Thanks!

See where they are catching lots of them down south. I think the squid fishing this far north is dependent on favorable ocean conditions, currents, temps they may or may not show up this far north. Many people like catching them but honestly I think its bad for our rockfish and probably even the salmon when they show up off our North Coast in massive numbers, those things are eating machines and will eat anything.

I believe Rick Powers of the New Sea Angler out of Bodega Bay was going to do some squid searching.

Don't they go out at night with under water lights and glow in the dark jigs? I'm in SoCal now and they're everywhere. Wouldn't mind taking the boat out for some squiding

As mentioned earlier, they are down south and unlimited. One boat took in 1100 on one trip:

San Diego, Humbolt Squid, Dana Point, Newport Beach, Squid Fishing, Dana Wharf (http://www.wonews.com/t-SouthernCASaltwater_SanDiego_011913.aspx)

I called Santa Cruz and Monterey yesterday to see if anyone is planning a Humboldt trip this weekend and was told they are not here right now but it should happen sometime soon. The cost quoted was $80 a day and it is a day light trip with jigs and glow sticks. That means they are down deep and it is a snag hook so the fight will be on and there is no limit.

Does anyone know how far out do we need to go? I've never launched out of Santa Cruz but should be able to get out from moss landing.

That's a 2 liter bottle in the corner to give some size perspective.
this is from San Lucia Bank i caught them 24-7 for three days straight over a 25 mile drift at 900' every drop.
They school in groups up to 1200 and like to hang out on the upwelling side of steep structure to use to pin prey against.

I was using Accurate 80-W low gear fought all the way up every time average size was about 7'

I had several taken out by sharks on the way up near the thermocline.

Takes a long time to bring the big ones up from 900' i just dropped it in the rod holder.

I was catching them for bait.

We recently were using 110 YFT for baits lol

Please explain bait and picture??
I don't think head boats have rod holders. Only ones are attached to your shoulders.

I wouldn't mind taking a guide any other locations besides Santa Cruz?
