Save your money. Jigs work just as well and are cheaper IMHO.

Depends where and how you're fishing...darts will catch fish 3:1 ratio @ Freeport off the bank.

Red/Chartreuse, Fluorescent Orange/Chartreuse, Dark Green + Blue tip/Chartreuse, Hot Pink/White, Orange/White, Lime Green/White, Black/Chartreuse...that's about all the colors you need...at least in my opinion.

Yeah I've heard that. I've never fished there yet. I've only targeted them in the AR.
Also I've read a great book about Shad and the easy coast fishery. They almost exclusively use darts out there.

That's where i used the darts.

I meant east coast.
Stupid autocorrect.

Name of the book was Founding Fish.
Great read. Except Bigg Ant didn't like it much.

If Ant didn't like it, more than likely I probably won't like it either...LOL.

Those look good but I like to have the barb on the shank to hold the grub up.

So we're using crappie lures for shad? That's right up my alley ;-)

It's very similar. 1/16 chartreuse jig head, pink tail one inch long.

Ain't bobber fishing much easier? Less gears get lost.

Your correct that less gears gets lost that way, but bobber fishing may not be as effective as drifting the lure and bouncing around the bottom. There are a few times the fish are suspending higher than usual, that's when the bobber comes in handy. Other than that, I can almost guarantee that drifting w/o a bobber will always out fish one that does use it.

I'm not sure how effective those are, color wise. A pack of two of champagne and chartreuse grub with some pink or chartreuse jig head will do you good.

Naw......just keep it simple and get the grubs from FW. You can order jigheads off eBay for super cheap and make your own colors

I haven't fished AR just feather at shanghai. Haven't been there for a while but that was what everyone was using at the waterfalls. On AR there aren't any big drop offs, som I'm guessing dredging the bottom is the way to go.

Still nothing for me. I've been down to Freeport the last 2 days and haven't seen any guys landing them, even the regular vietnamese guys who fish off of Jetskis with cane poles weren't getting them.

All the ones I've seen were little 2lb males, the big female schools are yet to arrive.

Soon....

I am going to try shad fishing this year this week or next I have only done it a few times and has been 20 years ago. Should I try Freeport what side of river is best? should I go to discovery or miller park? I have a two pole stamp can I throw a rod in for stripers? a half once weight and a two foot leader is that the set up? I am driving from Modesto so I don't want to get skunked.

My question is a little like the last one. I have never been shad fishing, other than catching a few for bait on the Columbia, and was thinking of heading out of Garcia Bend towards Freeport. Is it worth going out now or should I wait a week or so? I was planning on taking the wife out and would rather catch something as she is not that patient. If not I might head down towards Rio Vista and try and catch a striper.

I went to Fisherman's Warehouse yesterday and think I got everything I need. Funny is I pretty much already had just about the same thing in some of my Crappie gear. Good information though.

Quite frankly, I don't think I'm in any position to be recommending you locations in part of because I myself have never caught a shad. It's my first year targeting them. Freeport is promising, but every day I've been down, the tide has been super high restricting my casts, or it's been too windy to get out into the middle.

Freeport seems to be the place though.

The chance of getting a skunked is just a part of fishing but I would recommend a 2oz weight for the stripers and adjust according to the current. Shad are biting from freeport up to discovery.

Are the Shad up in the Sac River near Redding/Redbluff that anyone has tried? I've been thinking about going out on the Sac near there this weekend and see. -Xzi

Was great.
The fish are still downstream. I had to ride a few miles for them.

Getting close! Harrington should be hitting soon! Can't wait!
