So I bought my first boat last July and it came with a cheap lowrance fish finder. I upgraded to a ray marine A50D and I don't really know what I'm looking at when I'm out in the water. I'm pretty sure I can can read when it scans a fish (I think) but I don't know what the other stuff on the screen are. I know you can never tell for sure what an image on the screen is but I know people that have more experience with fish finders have a better idea of what an object is. I just want to get peoples opinion on what they think they see in these images so I can get a better idea on how to identify what is on the screen. If it helps these images are from San Pablo Res.

Guessing the red mass is bait fish? And the lines around are fish hunting?

Also guessing the balls are bait fish? Possibly a fish near the middle under the bait fis and all the way to the right near the other bait ball?

You might consider the High Tech Fishing DVD's Understanding Sonar and Advanced HDS. Really goes into depth on what is on the screen and how to interpret the images. He is a Lowarance guy but the screen interpretation is the same regardless of the unit.
Welcome to Hightech Fishing with Doctor Sonar - "Doc" Bruce Samson (http://hightechfishing.com/store/dvd.html)

If I saw those returns on my sonar, I'd be very excited.

I would agree with you. Try going to 83 freq instead of 200. It looks like the bottom on the top pic to the left. Use as much gain as you can stand...then back it off a couple of notches.:carlaavatar8aw::carlaavatar8aw:
