Met my neighbor, Kevin, out at the end of my driveway at 4:00 am Sunday and we each journeyed to Pyramid Lake for some kayak cutthroat fishing. By the time we had taken care of breakfast, bought the permits, got some tips and perused the wonderful wall of lures at Crosby Lodge it was 9:15 before we were afloat. We started trolling south from Spider point trying to put our lures near the bottom at the 30 foot contour. I caught the first fish about 10:15 over 60 feet of water with 3 colors of lead core. We turned back north and at the bay north of Warrior Point joined a flotilla of craft ranging from a float tube to a yacht catching fish that were suspended at 30 feet in 40 to over 100 feet of water. We spent the night at W. P. and started catching again in the morning. I released at least 16 and lost at least that many near the boat. Kevinís tally was considerably higher. Most of the fish were silvery females 17 to 24 inches and we each caught or had on a few red fish that were a bit larger.

Love that lake. Good to see numbers coming from north of Pelican. Beautiful pictures of wonderful fish. In a couple of weels I will be trolling up that way. Perhaps a shore trip next week. Should be lots of jiggers off of Warrior. Did you guys ever thy that from your yaks?

This was my first visit to Pyramid in almost 40 years and I agree it is a wonderful and beautiful place. And the cutts are beautiful too and fought better than expected given their reputation for behaving like an old boot on the end of your line. Had some jumpers.
I have viewed videos of jiggers pulling up fish after fish at Pyramid and carried a spinning rod with marabou jig for that purpose, but with the basic sonar in my yak never marked a concentration of fish so didn't try. I tried a few casts from shore.

I only saw one large concentration of fish that I would have jigged at, but instead I told BTS to watch this Im going to catch a fish in 20 paddles, I counted them off aloud and on the 19th paddle....FISH ON!!!!!!!

I did throw a firetiger maribou jig whenever there were other boats in my trolling line while I waited for them to pass. It was no secret where the fish were lots of boats. No hits on it though.

The steel bug grabbed me hard this year didn't hit any my favorite lakes this year like i always do dec thru april. But hell i saved a grip of money fishing next to home. Keep on slaying them.brother.

Pyramid certainly isn't the same fishery it was 40 years ago. I fished the lake from 1971 - 1974 while attending UNR and deemed myself fortunate if I got one strike per trip. The stocking program by the tribe was a real game changer. Now with the new guys in town (Pilot Peak LCT) things should be going up another notch.
