Good start but not peak time from everything I have read. This will my first year even fishing for them but I have done a fair bit of research so far

Keep an eye on this thread, many people here are seasoned shad fishermen. Can vary a little every year time wise but with the mild weather, lack of runoff, and warming water temps I have a feeling things will get going in couple weeks.

one more question couldnt find in book

if im fishing sailor bar do i need barbless hooks for shad?

it says its a barbless area but its in the salmon/steelhead regs but not in shad regs.

thx again

It's on DFW website and yes it's barbless. It states if you are fishing waters on the list to follow those regs. Yes we have many shad experts here. Do some searching here and you will find great info in some of the recent post. I believe big ant had a step by step tutorial written up that was great!

Sailor Bar - Mid May to Early July

Barbless. As for timing, that will be fine. The good thing about shad is you can let the go getters let you know when the run is heavy. Wait til its hot then fish. There is NO shortage of shad. Banker and I will be slayin em this year.

When fishing on the AR, use a 1" - 1" champagne(pink works as well) or chartreuse grub with a 1/16 oz jig head pink or chartreuse jig head. It seems to be more effective when you have a pink/champagne grub on a chartreuse jig head, or chartreuse grub on a pink jig head.
If you are drifting on the bottom, use a split shot or two about 3-4 feet above your grub. When you feel a tug, tug, tug(a lot of times it can be just bouncing off the bottom) or just pure pressure loading on your rod tip, set the hook!
If you want to go with a bobber, then have it about 4 feet above your grub with a split shot in the middle to give it some depth without fluttering all over. And you should know the rest of the process with using a bobber...happy fishing, shad season will be here soon!

youre three weeks early

He was scouting 4 months ago......methinks you don't understand his addiction to shad.

The 1/32 oz dart or ball head jigs and a 1" grub work the best for me. As for colors Champagne grub and Chartreuse jig head have been a great combination.

If you can find them clear/silver or glow/silver fleck work great also. Again use with pink or chartruese jigheads 1/16 or 1/32 size
