I fished the Truckee with my fly rod today. There was on and off wind which was frustrating, but it was manageable in between gusts. I was using a size 6 golden stone beadhead nymph with a pheasant tail dropper. I hooked a nice rainbow that was a solid 16" but lost it, so I couldn't tell which fly it took. I wish I could have landed the bow. Right after I set the hook I saw a flash of bright pink and began to fight the fish. The problem was I had too much excess line out since it hit the fly upstream of me, so I wasn't able to fight the fish on my reel and I had to fight it by hand stripping line. I was moving up the bank trying to make the fish take up slack, but it never happened. It popped off. A little up river I was able to land the biggest fish of my life on a fly rod, a 3lb mountain whitefish. All I knew is it wasn't a rainbow, so I was hoping a brown, but my friend helps me net it and says, "oh it's a whitey!" But oh well, at least it wasn't a skunk.

I also "scouted" the South Yuba. I say that because as I was grabbing my new UL, I realized that it's not open yet, I didn't actually fish of course... These are the pics I took at Cisco Grove.

You may be thinking of the Little Truckee between Stampede and Boca. The Truckee is open year round, but I was also in Nevada which doesn't close any rivers in the winter, at least not the ones I know of, the Truckee, the Carson and the Walker.

It's usually barely fishable right now, and even then pretty much only east of Reno since it's deeper and slower there. The flows are nice since we had such a horrible snow year, so hopefully we don't pay the price with low lakes/reservoirs for the rest of the year.
