So are bank fishermen just fishing darts on a drop shot rig? I can't imagine trying to jig from the bank with all that current on the Sac river. This will be my first shad year and I want to get my oldest son on some of these bullets!

Fish on!

From what I was told months back, get some shad darts, tie to a roughly 24" or so leader, swivel, then a sliding half ounce egg sinker.

Sliding sinker rig on a smaller scale.

I put up a little info on the general freshwater board about sac river shad.....check it out or maybe one of the mods will move it over here and make it a sticky

3/4 - 1oz egg sinker with 36-48 inches of leader.

Generally, the first fish show up on the AR about 2 weeks after they show in freeport

Tried today evening. Few guys slinging darts but nothing and striper fishing was lousy too. Still early, they aren't in thick yet so it's too inconsistent. Had a duck on for a couple of seconds though. It didn't put up much fight.

Nice catch Matt!

I'm most likely heading up there saturday morning and fishing for some shad in the morning and then heading over to the port with the yak at night! I'll PM to see if you're busying this weekend :)

Swim fast! How long would you guess before they hit Sunrise on the AR? Hate to break it to you American River enthusiasts but tipically when there is 15 CFS or less being released, the majority of shad blow right by the mouth and head for bigger water. Some will go up but you won't see any great numbers making their way up there. If levels are increased in the next 2 weeks to accomodate thirsty farmers in the south, it would change all that. 3000 CFS would be the optimal level for a good healthy run. This opinion is not just my own but also, not to mention any names, a couple of the more prominent guides that fish the AR have told me this as well. I just hope we get some water back in the river for the shad and the salmon which will be headed our way before you know it. Keep your fingers crossed.

im fine with a few fish. where i fish there is hardly any fisherman and catching a few is good enough for me since i dont keep them. the only one i probably keep is smaller one to hook them right away for big stripers

Hell yeah....they're delicious!!!!. They also make excellent crab bait and I've used some for fertilizing the garden as well.

Just got back from freeport after school. Casted darts with 3/4 to 1 ounce weights for nothing the entire hour. Lost 2 rigs and reeled up a nice Rapala crank bait snagged in the rocks, so that was the best thing I landed.

About 12 other guys out on the banks, no luck for the shad for anyone. One dude was landing baby stripers and squaws, but that's it.

Now for the two guys on that boat in the middle of the river it was a different story. A massive school was moving by and these guys limited out within an hour of me being there. They filled their net with some shad and drove up to the bank and handed a few out to the guys next to me.

tl;dr Shad are in the system en masse but they're holding deep and in the middle of the river. To all you boaters, good luck.

I lost a good portion of my darts within two days of trying for them, do you think needlefish and mepps really thin trolling spoons made for trout and kokanee would work? I know flutter spoons are as popular as darts back east of the nation. I'm going out right now, I'll try both.

Shad holding far and deep, that means whip out the 8'6" and load that sucker up with 1 oz...retrieve SLOW. Nothing else and nothing more.
