How does one get started in rod building? It's? Piece together parts? I told my wife about wanting to try it and she says "great, now you're gonna need a whole bunch more expensive tools, right? Just like for archery...and reloading...and scuba diving..." Im hoping this is an "economical" hobby!

Unfortunately it is definitely not an economical hobby. It's definitely rewarding, but anything but economical.

I would start by flipping through mudhole.com and you'll get a better idea of what it takes.

I agree 100%. Building your own rods is not an inexpensive alternative to factory retail rods. I build my own to my own custom specs. For instance, I really like the Abu Vendetta rods a ton for the $60 average price, but the guides on the Veritas series are much better. For about $70, I can build a rod with the same blank as the less expensive one, and use the guides from the Veritas series. Also, I prefer split-grips, but as a kayak angler, many of the split grips available are 12-16" long, and constantly rub on my rib cage when paddling. I can build a custom rod with a 8" split handle that suits my needs better than factory rods.

Here are a couple of mine over the last couple years. Seeker black steel with black widow wrap done in Halloween colors for my wife's sturgeon rod. Also surf rod rebuild with a tiger and st John's cross thread wrap.

Hey Ghost, those tigers are very nice. And that surf rod with the cord grip is nice, did you just wrap the reel seat on with the cord grip?

Oh man I have got to me a couple rods with the 49ers and Giants logos on them. I just fell in love with that rod WOW!!

Any idea on a price for something like that in an existing rod? I assume it would be stripped and re wrapped?

Fish on!

Just moved back to the Bay from Oregon and glad to see folks posting pics of their builds. I tried to find some pics of some builds to post, but couldn't any recent ones. Here are some older builds.

Ill upload more when I find the pics.
