I thought they were grown up salmon. I heard that there were a few caught during the shad run on the American last year.Last year I had a mystery fish take alot of drag out on a big run then get off. My hook on my jig was bent almost straight. I figure it was either a striper or a salmon.
I don't know if I would want to catch a full sized salmon while shad fishing. It would hurt having to release a salmon after landing it on 4 lb test. I let all large stripers go, so I would'nt mind a striper.

Salmon smolts. They are THICK this year. I go out on my yak a couple times a week and they are jumping like mad in huge schools.

I landed three adults last June/early July on shad gear. Most fun I've had catching salmon.

Def a salmon smolt, look how thick the bars are on the side. steelhead would have smaller circles and less of a pattern.
