Time once again to look at the Carsons prior to Saturday opener. With Jetspray riding shotgun we headed west to take a look. Generally the rivers are running at normal or below normal for this time of year. The East Carson is somewhat off color but fishable running around 600 CFS. The roads are clear and open past the Highway 4 bridge. The West Carson is running at 190 CFS with good water quality. If the nights remain cold then these flows should hold. Of note the Blue Lakes road is open up past the Hope Valley Campground and there is access to the river across from the Campground. Monitor Pass is now open and 88 is snow free in the Hope Valley. The Campgrounds at Indian Creek and Crystal Springs will open Friday before the opener. At the White Bridge we found an gentleman fishing. We told him that he was risking a big ticket if the Warden or Sheriff happened by. He didn't catch any fish. The weather is clear and the days slightly above normal. Good luck to all who come up. How about some pictures?

The water was to colored to see any fish on the East Carson. The water was better on the West Carson. I did not see a fish. I was told by a local that the County will be stocking Thursday or Friday.

Great pictures Richard. Wonder why all those spots seem vaguely familiar. Its still hard to believe that in a week's time all those opportunities will be within a half hour of my home. Call you when I get into town.

I went over the pass on my Harley last Saturday but only as far as the Kirkwood Inn for lunch. Silver Lake was about 60% frozen. There was a guy in a boat working the open water though. It's probably clear by now I would guess.

Great Photos! Great Info!

Those two rivers are frequently planted by Calif. DFW (normal sized planters) and Alpine County (trophy sized planters from a Susanvill hatchery).

After those planting, one might want to fish downstream from any highway bridge (where they normally plant from).

Great info! Thanks for posting! I'll be up that way to take a walk and search for a new lake to try, but might wait until monday so I don't have to deal with any crowds

Thanks for scouting CC, I'm taking my parents to South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, and will likely take my dad fishing on Monday. Hopefully the west fork isn't too crowded...dad's 80 and I don't want him scrambling around any steep banks.

He was a little off in his timing, but decided to pack it up for another day (he didn't think he was poaching until we talked to him a little). I suspect to see a few poles in the water prior to sunlight today. It will still be combat fishing for the most part and stumbling around on the rocks in the dark:appledancing::appledancing::appledancing:.... ...Jetspray

The west carson was an absolute CIRCUS today! Managed to find some untapped holes and caught four fish total. One of em was only 11" or so so back it went. Beautiful day and had a great time with my dad, but we will definitely be spending the next opener in a much more secluded setting for sure. Its amazing how many people will crowd up and fish one hole, reminds me of seeing salmon fishing on the AR.

CRAZY STORY... My dad hooked into the bigger fish i'm holding but due to an old set up, the fish snapped the line with a $15 jerkbait in it's mouth! We were heartbroken! But I told my dad about a thread i read on sniffer where a guy was fishing hat creek and had a brookie snap his line, but he was able to get the same fish back with the jig still in it's mouth. Well, I wormed up and caught one fish, and the next fish i caught was the same fish WITH THE JERKBAIT IN ITS MOUTH!!! I now call the fish my $15 trout haha

You didn't get any fish?? What time did you get there? We had to hike pretty far for ours, I'm all scratched up.

Nope. Got the skunk. This don't bother me. I'll have many more opportunities up on the Carson between now and Nov. 15th. Just enjoyed talking to folks and watching the show. :)

Those bushes are a arm snag away, most have thorns and mosquitos wait on the results. Skunkola is not uncommon for combat fishing (I'm included), just too many lines in the waters for people who travel long distances for the opener. Nice to see everyone though. BTW we were there around 04:45 at the Sorenson's bridge (oh dark thirty)......Jetspray

On the West Carson the Elevation at Sorensens is 7,000 ft. At Woodfords at the bottom of the canyon it's around 5,600 feet. The East Carson is around 5,600 feet at Hangmans Bridge and around 6,300 at the Hwy 4 Bridge.
