Along with the triditional opener on the last Saturday in April, the Friday before the day use area and Campground at ICR open allowing easier access to the west shore. Arrived with Jetspray at the walk in camp at 1000. The weather was warm with a gentle wind from the NE. I caught a nice 13 inch bow on the first cast. Generally the fish were in the steal your bait mode but we managed 9 bows to the shore in the 3 hours we fished. We were alone until about noon when others camping at ICR showed up. We saw Ruddy ducks, Coots, Pelicans, Comorants, Loons and Baldy did a fly by. A nice day and a good warmup for the Saturday opener.

On Saturday I picked up Dave at 0430 and headed up 88. We were looking for some other members who were fishing up there. We found them at Crystal Springs and they were fishing in a crowd. I spent most of my time watching and talking to others. Those few times I did cast I usually hooked another line. After Marinpaul, RidNfish, Marv and Jake left Dave and I went to check other spots. My general impression was it was very crowded and the fishing slow. Saw a few nice bow caught but not as many as previous years. Saw on no indication of the LCT that I heard the state was supposed to stock. The weather couldn't be nicer.

Actually it was not all that cold, I only had a hoodie on and sweat pants with thin long john's. You could see your breath, but by sunrise it warmed up considerably. At ICR we got there around 10:00 and were the only one's on the shore, by noon time everyone else showed up. It was the anticipation crowd for the opener........Jetspray

As you are going east on 88 you go over Carson Pass then Pass Red Lake. Around 4 miles further East on the right hand side there is a road going to Blue Lakes. About 2 miles up is the Hope Valley Campground. Across the road from the CG there is a large paved turnout. Park there and walk the 50 feet to the River.

Christal Sprins Bridge is on the Crystal Springs Road about a mile east of Woodsfords just off of 88.

Yeah, thanks Jet spray!!! Every minute or so he would say do you have one of these and I would say no and he would say here you go, take this :)

Richard, it was great seeing you again, always a pleasure.

B-Ran, nice meeting you and chattin, hope you got your slay on.

Bainter, Fishing wise I'd rather eat cat poop with a knitting needle. It was a cluster fudge with goof bags running wild. Some people are so childish when it comes to fishing. I seen an awesome display of ultimate douchery too, from the guy in waders to the right of Jake in his fish pic.

I love the Carson, but this ugly sucker isn't going near there on the last Saturday in April, lol.

Sorry we missed you Jeff. Yes it was mess at Crystal Springs. There were a couple of guys with waders they arrived later and waded to the middle of the river under the bridge and fished stright downstream and managed to catch multiple anglers with nearly every cast. High holeing jerks.:(

Agreed CAL.NDN, truly a joke now in parts of the Sierra, I understand its a tradition, but from what it use to be to now is just absolutely sad and ridiculous. It truly is a buzzkill when people are casting over you and sit 2ft away from you for a couple bites. Nobody believes in walking anymore and exploring but rather sit on where they plant like ants and wipe the whole out in 1 hour. It is what it is.

Funny thing is, everybody wonders why there's no fish in certain holes or say the fishing is bad like last year and other years, it's because those holes are fished out guys...😱

Combat fishing at it's finest. Funniest thing is the older fella that brought his (looked like grandson) and he was the one that caught the biggest fish of the day (that I saw). For me at least no one was injured in the maylay or got snagged, physically, by someone casting for that "big one".........Jetspray

Some people are limited to fishing closer and have put in many years rock hopping but after time there bodys might not be able to hop around as they used to so sitting under a bridge having fun soaking some bait or what have you and shooting the chit is great. I been going there for years now and have had epic days hiking up and down that canyon last year however after i became a sniffer i tryed under a few bridges for first time no one was around we did ok but not as well as past year's. We always do hiking around up there tbats way i was taught. I just think if you are gona combat fish be curious of the ones around and the old timers or whoever was there before you have some comon sence and respect.

Was nice to see everyone again and had a good time. Really wasn't about the fishing since this isn't my style of joining the crowds. I didn't get to meet B-Ran since the rude dude didn't come to my side of the river. Didn't realize that was you over there until Marv told me later. Oh, well...

Most people worked together so everyone could fish except for Mr. Annoying and his buddy. His buddy wasn't as bad but the "high holer" would just cast downstream and let his line stay in the middle and wait for a bite. That actually kept about 5 or six that couldn't cast until he came back in. Enough about losers.

All the important things were great. Seeing fellow forum buddies and being able to shake a hand and say hi were great. I hope I can run into that may fellow friends again but not at an opener. We will do it on our schedule!

A couple of shots,

Marv with his first ICR fish. I don't have one yet. :(

When i go up there now, i just get a motel room in Minden. ive stayed at a place called the Holiday Lodge, its hardly 5 star, but its cheap! Breakfasts at Sharkey's or Hamdogs, dinners at Hamdogs or one of the Basque places, coupla cocktails at The French Bar.......and repeat as necessary, minus the work of pitching a tent.......being able to bathe, and sleeping in a bed, all worth it!

Jetspray

When you go to Hamdog's for dinner don't get the pork chops unless you are ready to take one home. They bring you two and both are over 20 oz each:cuckoo:. It is also served with a baked potatoe, vegtables, and a relish tray with a desert and coffee after. You'll bust a gut otherwise. I love their fillet mignon and Porterhouse steaks as well:mind-blowing::wink:.......Jetspray

CC and Jetspray, it was great to see you, brief as it was. B-Ran, it was great to finally meet you out on the river. After catching a few nice fish in the morning, we left the Carson around 9:00 am and headed into the backcountry to enjoy the scenery and fish a couple of lakes. The fishing was excellent and we only saw a handful of people each day. It was truly spectacular. We'll see you on the Carson again this season when it's a bit less crowded!

Good to see your post CC! Took the fishing buddy up there on Monday (we met at Wild Sports in Orangevale when she asked if I knew how to fly fish, fish for Largemouth and trout). It's been a little over a week and a half and she's fished bass 3 times and now trout up on the West Carson! She's as addicted as I am which is scary! Ha Ha! Camped at Crystal Springs Campground and only one other vehicle was there. Fished White bridge for an hour or so after setting up camp and she landed a nice 13" bow. Was very slow there, unclear water and few fish so headed up a little further and she landed a second bow of 10" (I got the bite and handed off). Tuesday we fished Crystal Springs bridge where she landed 1 planter, Sorensens with no luck, up to 88/89, lots of people and not much catching, then up to Hope Valley. Water was very swift vs. the usual currents but managed a few misses. Drove back and fished along 50 and landed 2 more that were C&R also.

ICR is easy. The Bows seem to love chartreuse Gulp dough. Fish 8 to 12 inches off the bottom with a size 16 treble. Fish the corners of the dam. Fish below the Campground off the steep bank. Fish off the bank below the outhouse. Be prepaired to cast way out. Haven't fished Topaz for awhile. Most likely get out there in the next couple of weeks.
