View Full Version : What can be used for live bait?

In the DFG regs it says baited traps can be used to catch pacific staghorn sculpin, shiner surfperch, and longjaw mudsuckers. Throw nets can catch herring, pacific staghorn sculpin, shiner surfperch, surf smelt, topsmelt, anchovies, shrimp and squid.
Are these all the species that may be used as live bait? I would like to save myself $30.00 by catching my own bait but dont want to have an illegal fish in the live well.
What live bait do you like for butts/stripers?

Stripers will eat everything, and anchovies, harring, sardines, smelt, shiner perch ,squid all work for butts. dont have more than 10 shiners. sometimes it is easy to make bait. sometimes you will waste 1/2 the day fishing for bait. just keep that in mind.

Me and my cousin went to monster park today and we only brought 5 shrimps to catch shiners. Caught a 22 in striper on live shiner (no butts for us). there were 3 butts caught by 2 guys next to us and they all use the samething. Make sure u bring a bucket with holes and a long rope to put ur live bait in, otherwise they wont live too long.

P.s we were there from 7 to 11 this morning.

I used to bring death squid (you can buy at the market) with me, but now i use it as a backup bait. Definately bring a small pole and u'll get live chovies and shiner rite on the spot. Make sure you dont keep more than 20 shiners at a time thou.

Live squid appears at times, usally below santa cruz, much more abundent around the channel islands, but we have found some at pt Reyes. 2 years back. Mackeral Are more abundent to the south also.

Are you sure it is 20? I tought that 10 was the most of any 1 species you could possess.
