Hi everyone! Does anyone one use bait for Shad or are they a strictly artificial? Was up at Watt Ave bridge last week dunking worms. All we got were some trout and squawfish.

I have yet seen or recall of anyone using bait and catching primarily shad. If I would have to choose a bait for shad...it would be...candy corn. LOL.

They are a filter feeder just like sardines and many other herrings. So in other words, they are plankton feeders for the most part. Although they will eat krill and small shrimps including other small fish as part of their diet...but rarely.

Will change up my style. Too bad you can't use Sabikis. I went to Capitola Friday and caught a bunch of sardines on Sabikis.

No. Bait doesn't work.

In the river use grubs and jig heads.

Go to FISHERMANS WAREHOUSE and give them your money. They will get u set up.

I'm gonna test this theory. I bet I can get one on a salad shrimp

I was striper fishing with my buddy and he caught a big shad on a pile worm, by Brights Beach. He said he went back and got another one on a pile worm.

Last year someone reported catching a shad on a piece of cut bait American shad they were using for striper at Freeport. Probably just a fluke. Interesting about the pile worms though
