View Full Version : Lawson's 8/10...Bitter sweet

Fished out of Lawson's yesterday for what will be my last fishing trip til Nov 1st. With the grape harvest approaching I decided to make one last run for salmon. Arrived at Lawson's at 615 expecting to find a line of 10-20 boats. Nope, we drove right up and were #3 to launch. Weather was foggy and calm. Turned the corner at Bird to find the fleet further down by Elephant. We setup "The Trees" in 70ft. this was my first time mooching since I went to BC 6 yrs ago. I watched some youtube vids this we and asked some peeps the 411. I took it all in and rigged up a setup of my own. I painted a 5oz banana weight orange, clipped on the chain swivels and 5ft circle hook leader. For bait we used large tray herring, cut plug style.

We setup and dropped em to the bottom reeling up a few feet. Didn't take long and my friend Brian is yelling my at me, I turn to my rod doubled over in the holder. Nice fighting fish, goes into the net after a 5min battle. 22.5#er

Next hr we miss a couple hard pull downs and reset the drift. I keep reseting my bait on the bottom and finally I see a tap on the rod. I pick it up and the line goes completely slack. Like always when you see slack, reel like hell. Fish on and it's a toad, coming straight at the boat. Fish turned and peels off 100ft of line. I see it thrash the surface and its in the mid 30s. After almost getting my line ran over twice by other boats, I put the heat on him, Lifting and reeling, gaining a few feet at a time. Fish starts head shaking hard and POP! GONE!!! Heartbreaking loss! Getting my line in to fine the circle hook semi-straightened out.

Shake off the defeat and get back to it. Next drift was hot with 5 hookups and us landing 2. Brian boxed a 18#er and I landed another 22#er.

After our flurry of action the fleet swarmed us and we could hear them chattering on the radio about us. Next thing I know we have 30-50 boats right on our drift. Didn't matter, got our go home fish at 9:59 am. Brian scored a nice 20#er( on my rod)!

Tried for halibut on the bar for a while with no action. On the trailer and headed home at 1pm.

Had a few brews and cleaned fish at my pops house. All summer long I've been enjoying smoking the collars and bellies. But, today i found my new fav piece, the cheek. As were cleaning fish we busted out the soy and wasabi. No joke, we ate 8 cheeks while cleaning fish and BSing. If you haven't tried it, it's a must. Mild flavor with a almost crunchy texture.

Thanks for the report! Sounds like you had a great day! The lost hog is rough but you got your limits so way to go!

I only mooched once and it was on light tackle, trout rods, and boy was it fun. Great report. Do you work for a Nor Cal winery?

Hey Fishstix,

I just looked at Lawson landing on google maps, is it just a beach launch there? I've never been there myself. How does it work and is it easy?

Nice fish, glad you guys had a good time. I hate it when others move in and crowd you, at least give you space!

Reel Fun

Thanks, They have a nice beach launch and for $20 they will launch you with a tractor and when you get back in if you call them on the radio they will have your trailer waiting for you to drive up on. If your boat is not too big you can self launch. Its only about a half mile to Bird Rock!! They always have both bag bait and tray bait right there at the launch at a very reasonable price.....RF

Those are some fine fish. The weather and broken down boats have conspired to keep me off the salmon grounds since late July.
