Of course we remember all the fishing gear when leaving before the crack of dawn, but we also need to bring other important stuff. Please help me compile a list. I'll start by eluding to my latest lesson:

Toilet Paper

Ones that have been an issue for me before: Tool to open gas filler cap (if boat has one), plug for boat, and my favorite that only happened once but it was a big one.... fishing poles.

Fishing license, stringer, lantern. I have different tackle bags and boxes depending on what I'm fishing for so I always have to grab my license from a different bag

Beer!

Ok ok I've forgotten license, food, always the freaking worms, water, more food (I eat a lot), rods. I've yet to forget the plug for the boat. However I do a triple check before I leave.

My biggest opps that I forgot was my tackle box. Swapped all my river gear out of boat for trout gear and left box on shelf, didnt realize until pulling into camp at Hell Hole that night. Luckily others had gear to borrow but felt like a dumba$$.

Couple others:
Boat and trailer registration
Trolling motor battery if u remove it
Needle nose or fishing pliers
Scale and be sure its working if digital
Camera bcuz we all love fish porn
Fishing partner who hopefully ahows up on time, otherwise theyre optional

Toilet Paper

I always have a (large) package of those pre-moistened wipes in my fishing pack...and I make sure it is full.

Not only do they provide a superior alternative to toilet paper, they are wonderful when you have bait funk or fish blood or whatever on your hands.

Since all my fishing is done from shore, on foot, in as remote an area as possible, and usually alone, I also include:

Aluminum emergency blanket
Waterproof matches/firestarter kit
UV water purifier
Knife
Sat Phone
Signal mirror
Headlamp with spare batteries

All this stuff is always in my fishing backpack...so I don't even have to think about it. I don't even worry about food...it would take my fat ass a long time to starve to death.

Depending on where I am going (mainly possible dope growing areas) I might have a 9mm handgun.

This all might sound like a bit much, but I like to go alone to remote areas and the emergency equipment provides a good "safety net" to do that without too much fear of what might go wrong.

I find it interesting that you mentioned a signal mirror, I took a survival course as part of my flight training and before that had no idea what a signal mirror was. Wallet, Cell phone, Alarm to wake me up in the first place.

any old CD or DVD makes a good signal mirror device.

I have forgotten to put registration on boat and found out at gate at San Pablo Reservoir.

I have forgot to put plug in boat so it sank at launch.... Twice! LOL

O.K. I might be the first to admit this but I started forgetting so much stuff that I finally made up a laminated check list and put a grease pencil ... umm somewhere.. no seriously, I have to use a check list or sure as heck I'll forget something.

I just remembered another one... The fish stringer full of fish hanging over the side. It's one thing to pull it in at speed and find it empty but it's another to drag it up the ramp.

Another one is forgetting to trim up the trolling motor before taking off at speed. I put a label on my main motor control that say's TRIM THE DAMN TROLLING MOTOR UP!!!!.

I pack the day before so I don't forget anything. Yet I still manage to always forget at least 1 thing. Last time out it was my sun glasses. I have gotten to my fishing spot at 5am and go to grab a lure from my tackle box that I left sitting on the couch, lol. I too forget the worms..... lots of worms are dodging the bullet thanks to our forgetfulness :)

First of all great thread. I have a pen and paper ready for the checklist each trip. Wallet, phone, fishing license, poles, pole holder, Tackle Bag with assorted power worms, weights, hooks, barbless lure box, other lure box, tape measure, water bobber, indicators, swivels, wooly bugger and hook sharpener. Jig tackle box and small trout tackle box with leaders and power bait. Depending on weather rain boots and rain gear and a change of clothes. Cooler with ice and water, Arnold Palmer's, and a beer or 12 for after. Food. Fillet knife, cutting board, ziplock bags, pliers for bones, paper towels and camera. This is what I bring for trout and if I take the dog the list is: Dog, leash, water, bowl, ball, paper towel, plastic bag and soap.

The important thing I was supposed to do instead of going fishing (picking somebody up at the airport, meeting up with somebody else to go out, watching a game, etc.) Ha ha ha

No but seriously... my fishing license! Sometimes i will be positive i have it on me and when i return I will realize that it is sitting in another tacklebox or something! Luckily DFG hasn't approached me on those specific days... yet!

You mean I am not the only one who has forgot the motor. All the way from Shingle Springs to Eagle Lake and just as I am entering Susanville a sinking feeling came over me as I realized I had forgotten to bring the electric trolling motor. Had to stop in KMart and get a garbage can to drag to slow me down.. Caught a bunch of fish that outing anyway.

Speaking of forgetting, I probably have forgotten most, if not all, of the things mentioned.
But I have a question, can a cell phone pic of your license be used to show DFG that you have one?

Well that's a helluva lot of stuff to remember. Don't have a boat but I might need one to stow all this stuff!

Love the idea of a laminated checklist. Now where did I put away that laminator... :confused2:
