View Full Version : Bodega Bay 11/12 Crabbing

It was certainly a GREAT day crabbing and fishing with Doneli aka Eli, Stony and Al.

As mentioned, we dropped the pots with Al demonstrating the “how to” with one trap then Eli and Stony too over dropping the remaining eight.

Then we motored upstream to the exact same spot where Al and I fished last week and couldn’t catch a rocky to save our lives but low and behold, those fish were there yesterday. It was non-stop action with me being the “net boy”…I protested afterwards saying that I wanted to be promoted to “net MAN”! http://outcastanglers.com/forums/images/smilies/more/sAng_scream.gif

While out there, I was able to exchange reports with Capt Jack on how his day was going. Nice talking with you Steve.

After a 4 hr soak we started pulling traps. Again another demo, Al manned the retrieval hook and davit while Eli and Stony watched and learned. Then the two took over with retrieving the remaining 8 pots. Both took to the tasked like a duck to water. Great deck hands for sure.

The first two pots were loaded mostly with Jumbo grade but the third pot was raided with the zip ties cut and missing and and the pot empty. On the fourth, one of the four doors hinge was broken so all but three crabs escaped. All in all we were able to limit out for the four of us with mostly Jumbo and a few commercial grades.

Back at the slip, Eli and I washed the boat while Al staged the cooking gear and fired up the pot with seawater to boil, while Stony started filleting the spoils. There were so much fish that we played “tag team” where Eli took over from Stony a while then afterwards I took over with the knife.

All the fillets individually packaged and covered with ice as well as the packaged crabs, we then headed for the barn about 5:30.

What a day, with a great crew. Thanks Eli and Stony for accompanying Al and I on the Reel Kahuna.

Thanks for the report. What's gonna work? Team work! Looks like you guys had a great day and good eats.
Do people regularly raid other peoples pots?

Two days ago I got an invitation to go crabbing and RF aboard on The Reel Kahuna. What a tough decision. Should I go to work? or call in sick and go fishing? Called the boss and requested a vacation day...No problem He said and there we go.
Meet Seon and White Cap, AL. At flaying J at 4:00 a.m. and stopped at rio vista to pick Stony to join us on the adventure. Got to Bodega at 6:00 a.m. set everything and headed to the fishing grounds.
Dropped the crab traps and moved farther out to do some rock fishing.
Didn't took long and Al scored on a nice ling cod, then it was my turn and another nice cod went in the box...Soon we were catching blues and reds and cods in the mix. It was a steady action and a lot of jokes on the mix..suddenly Seon hooked up on a nice fish and after a good fight it broke the line and took off to fight another day. after that we got our limits on ling cods and a good amount of blues and reds. By then it was time to go and check on the crabs. Started picking them up and they had some nice jumbos, pic
ked all the traps and got four limits...What a good day!!!!...went back to port and cleaned all the fish, cooked the crabs and went back home with a big smile.....Thanks so much Seon and Al for all the training on crabbing, it was a great experience for me. And for all the fun we had, a lot of laughs aboard The Reel Kahuna.
Pic will say some...more to follow.

Great looking lings. Glad you got quality crab. Hope to get out on Friday out of the gate drop them and ten check the pots Saturday. Might try for rock cod but have never cod fished out of the gate. Seon is that Steve Jacks? If so I used to fish his tournament in Rio Vista Great guy and a very knowledgeable striper fisherman. I used to crab out of Bodega with my buddy all the time and we caught a commercial guy raiding our pot on the last day. I said to my buddy "that guys in our string". My buddy said "no way"! Well our pots went 0-0-0-0-and 14 in the pot he was about to check but bolted when he saw us coming. Pots get stolen all the time too. When you see a boat with no hauler just 4-5 guys in the front with a big can, those are the dirtbag raiders.

Good job gentlemen as always ! Looks like you gentlemen had a blast. Those are some nice looking fish on the dock photo. Sorry to hear about the pots getting raided, whatever happen to the " Honest System " or " If it is not yours Don't Touch ! ". Is that the norm out in Bodega Bay having pots raided? Hope to get out there this weekend if the weather allow. Thank you for sharing again.

Sounds like a great day! This pot stealing thing seems to get worse out there every year. Real shame.

Yes, Steve Jacks aka Capt Jack.

I lost 6 brand new pots with new rope, buoys and weights last year while soaking 2-3 days. Not deterred, I replaced them and now soak 3-4 hrs then stow them on the boat that's berth at Spuds Point Marina during crab season.

As mentioned, thieves are getting bolder...it's not "if", it's "when" your pots goes missing or raided is inevitable.

I'd like to see fish and game set up some type of sting on this with tracking devices in pots where the sheriff can just pull up to these guys house and arrest them or just fine the **** out of them.

What depth did you drop your trap? Will be heading there for the first time this sunday.

Thanks for reports.
