I always start thinking about a fish 3-4 months before they get here.

I started prepping and learning new techniques for steelies 3 months ago.

And while I am steelie fishing I will be scouting new runs for shad. It's what I do.

Way, way, way to early!

As in, why even fish for shad- kind of early!! They're slimy and smelly and small, why not get your fish on with some native fish? Just kidding, to each their own and I guess they do smoke up good for the mother in law.

Really though, take the advice from the others above, focus on fish that are available now in our rivers, although it's good to plan ahead to slay the (slimy) chrome.

Best,

Matt, it's too soon to fish for them but never too soon to think about it. Here's a trick I learned years ago.

Bleed and gut your Steelhead in the river and watch for the shad to appear. No shad, then its too soon. You should start seeing a few in the late spring.

seeing as shad are plankton feeders and or eat small insects. Why would they be attracted to a steelhead being cleaned?

Shad?? I didn't think the word existed until may/June. For me shad are like the NBA and all others are like the NFL....NBA just passes time until football season starts. Shad just pass time until salmon get here hahahaha

I do scout out spots though when I'm on the river no matter why I'm there lol

You know we're talking american shad correct??? ;)

I have cleaned a lot of fish in the river during the run and I haven't seen them coming to check things out. Seeing as American shad run during the heat of the summer. All the steelhead are long gone by then so I guess we'll never know.

What river was this in? Maybe coastal CA rivers out your way get steelies the same time as shad?

Up in Oregon, the winter steelies were also long gone by the time the shad came in, you could either target shad or spring chinook. We usually went for the nooks, but catching shad was lots easier.

Okay, someone tell me I'm crazy or I'm seeing a different species of fish. The past two days, I've been seeing boils in the main sac at sunrise and an hour before sunset, the boils start up again. I counted pretty much 100 boils and small to 6lb silvery fish launching themselves out of the water, clean up in the air, mostly in the middle of the river where the leaves and debris are coming downstream. Not in a striper crushing on surface bait manner, but in a "there are too many damned fish in this school so I need to breach" type of jumping.

I also saw about 8-12 cormorants while driving near Freeport today, all in a fishing formation and they were very clearly diving on some sort of fish, and stripers weren't anywhere to be seen on the surface.

February 3rd and the shad are already here, or am I just seeing loads of dink stripers?

MarkdaShark19
02-03-2014, 06:13 PM
Half pound steelhead or salmon smolts maybe? Possibly threadfins or even squaws. Very doubtful that they were shad but honestly with the weather this year it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm highly doubting they were smolts, but hey, you never know. Silver all around and just launching themselves out of the water in a stiff manner. I've yet to see a squaw boil let alone a threadfin that was big enough to make large splashes. If they're doing it again tomorrow evening and the tide isn't too swift, I'll drag my kayak out to the middle of the river and see what they are.

The rain might have sent a few pods up early, but like I said, I have no idea what they are. If anyone else lives near or on the sac, go out during greylight and see if you can identify them.

The cormorant flock is still in freeport right before the bridge with a few gulls mixed in with their ranks. They were all in the water diving earlier today but I couldn't see what they were pulling up due to driving. A really little sea lion is also around the area right now and me and my girlfriend saw him thrashing a fish that looked pretty darn identical to a male shad yesterday. Something anadromous and that schools up a lot and that isn't predatory is in the river right now, and I have no idea what the hell they are and it's killing me lol.
