I am glad that I put out the invite for someone to bank fish with me. RedNeckPunk (Darren) took the bait and met me at Amador Lake at 06:30 I wanted to try an area that a couple of fellow forum buddies told me to try out. RNP and I parked by the spillway and started hiking. Man that water is LOW! Strange to stand up at the spillway and not have water anywhere near there. I haven't been there in two years though so things have changed. We walked for about 10 min or so and decided to try a point we just passed. Saw some fish surfacing so down we went and set up. Would end up being where we spent the first half of the day until RNP had to leave.

We each put a bait rod out but we were really hoping for some lure or wooly action. We were able to get some lure action but unfortunately the bait rods won out. I had my bait rod about 8' out from shore with white PE on it and it didn't get touched for about an hour. I asked Darren what he had on and he said, "white power eggs." Crap... I always want to try something different than others until one of us figures out a pattern. So I reeled in and put orange PEs on. I cast it out but this time about 10 yards to my left but still very close to shore. I set my rod in the holder and as I was messing with getting it set up the line starts pulling. Fish on! Landed the first fish of the day at about 07:50. So I cast it out again AND NO BULL exact same thing. Rod in holder, getting it set up with strike indicator and never got that far. Fish on again. Ok, two are now landed. Set it back out and this time got the rod set up turned my back and yep, you guessed it, fish on. haha Three in a row. Nothing huge but just nice fat fish.

I told Darren to put his r̶o̶d̶ er... fishing pole next to mine. He held fast to his spot and not long later hooks up with his first fish. I believe this was after he switched to the orange PEs as well.

We or should I say "I" continued to catch fish here and there off the bait rod. But what was real weird is how many fish took the bait and when you got over to the rod you would feel the fish for a sec then gone. Like you were pulling the egg right out of there mouth. This of course happens sometimes buy I have never had this many hits with misses. I had to miss around 8 or 10 I don't know. Darren missed a couple too but he "COUGH cough" wasn't getting as many bites. :)

The entire time we were throwing lures of all types, wooly buggers, jigs, etc. I did catch one on a jig and got three fish on a purple pistol pete wooly but then it broke off at shore in the fishes mouth. If anyone catches a fish with a purple pete I'll give you a dollar for it. haha

A couple more action shots.

So at least later in the day we were able to get some lure type action. Darren got a couple on a firetiger Kastmaster and I did get one on a blue/silver KM.

Darren showing a couple more he caught.

Ask Darren about not letting me help remove a hook from a fish. I totally bent up beyond repair his Kastmaster treble. haha Wish I had a pic.

Low lake...

Darren had to leave and pick up the kiddies from school and I fished for another 45 minutes between the spillway and dam for two more on a olive/black wooly bugger.

I ended the day with 15 fish and I think Darren was 4. Just luck of the bait rod I guess.

Was really nice finally getting to meet RNP after seeing his post for so long. Thanks for joining me Darren and I hope we can chase some striper this spring. We should also do a motorcycle fish trip in the summer to a high mountain stream somewhere.

Great post and pics! Ya gotta luv it when things go your way .....makes it much easier to be modest

After being down one month with the flu, I am heading to Amador next week for a couple of tries and will be sure to take the Power Eggs in several colors.

You guys done good. Nothing better than sitting around catching lots of fat trout. Haven't been to Amador for several years. Might have to head over the hill. Been to NM lately?

Good fishing with giod people is what its all about! Only thing that would have made it better (besides me landing more fish), would have been a couple nice cigars, but forgot to theow them in my bag. Was great to finally fish wih Doug, despite the hook incident. Bet you didnt realize you were that strong? LOL!

Hmmm. So RNF pulled the old "let me help you unhook your fish" trick. He helps you and the hooks are mashed. Very suspicious if you ask me. I always carry a back up lure of the same color, just in case.

Just kidding! Good job out there at Slamador, I've been there twice and caught nothing. Congrats guys!

No I haven't and it bugs me. This winter or lack there of, has messed it up. NM is usually killer now for quality holdovers. I heard it has picked up a bit but....

So true, I may try it on Friday, and if I do I'll probably make the extra drive to GHRecArea

Nice fishing at Amador!

If I would of known RNP smoked cigars I could of brought some. :) I usually don't mess with them when bank fishing. I never set down a rod long enough, always casting. In a boat is another story.

RNF, very weird how they were biting PE's for you, they had lock-jaw today for PB & PE's! I caught 3 on a night crawler under a bobber and 2 on a silver/blue KM today. Guys around me couldn't buy a bite on PB/PE's, including me. Talked to some people at the cleaning station and it was the same, I did see some people doing pretty good with mice-tails. Oh well, at least I got out and even experienced some rain for a change!!!!!!

And the same thing happened to several of us today, got a hit and then nothing? Couple guys at the cleaning station had some fish that were LOADED with pellets. Maybe that's why they're not slamming the bait?

Somedays you do some days you don't . I went out for nada today couple of short hits thats it , I was there at zero dark thirty and there were already 4 cars at the spillway . Both my usual spots were taken and I made the mistake of not going to the nearest point or taking the long hike , settled on a new spot by my first choice oh well now I know . Weird though orange seemed to be the color today too . Saw at least 6 on orange pb taken , the guys that went to the point I should have tried limited with one about 3 pounds . Glad you were able to nail a few , I had better luck shootin the chit at wild sports . Tightlines BF

Funny you say that. Since this was my first time fishing Amador I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the fish we were catching. I've become accustomed to the typical lake planters that make these fish look like pigs. Granted, they weren't old school Eagle Lake size, they did put most planters to shame

Glad you had fun D. but with that said the fish up untill 2010 or so used to be huge in there a 6#r was considered small and then it just kept getting smaller average every year since then didn't go there last year nut in 2012 the average was 4# to 6# and I wasn't to impressed with that compared to what it used to be but they were fun on UL So I fished it a lot still now I wish they had the average 4 to 6# rs. Still need get out there for some good action.

Any size fish is better than no fish. LOL!! I guess I will have to hit the lake again and find one or two of those big ones that must be in there somewhere still.

8-9 years ago was an amazing year, got one over 9 out of there, full finned, all chrome, nearly spooled me. Since then, I have to agree, the quality has gone way down, size wise anyways. That was a 20lb+ stringer that day

That's exactly what I thought! I remember catching 3-5 pound fish every time I landed a fish.. Still fun fighting though! Same thing at Camanche.. I use to catch monster hold-overs all in the summer at night 5-10 years ago, I remember most of the fish had a lot of leaches on them.. I don't see leaches if any on many of the fish anymore at Camanche.. Anyways with that said, I believe I will be headed to Amador next week.. Me and a buddy did really well on the 24th/25th landing between 20-25 fish also loosing a few in the sticks.. All fish came on kastmasters with a couple on mice tail.. We released all but 5 of the fish, do not care for the cut bows at Amador maybe unless smoked.

Did you see anyone fishing the standing timber with mini-jigs? Has to be about crappie time.

I think some of you younger fellas need to go back a decade or two, and try what was used before powerbait and power eggs. I keep them on hand when I fish, and it seems they always put some nice fish in the boat. Maybe the Amador fish will respond to something a bit different too.

1/2 a mini crawler, and tip the hook with a Mikes Cheesy Sparkle Mello. I like the jars with the red, orange and yellow combined. Those cheesy mellows are like McDonald's french fries, they never seem to go bad. I get 2 seasons out of a jar, but I only use them during the turnover.
I think 1 of the advantages of banking over trolling this time of year, is that you get a chance to put a scent trail in the water, and the fish are drawn to it.
But, its kind of like the question, do you get wetter walking thru the rain, or running through it. Opinions vary.

BUIDB I did not see anyone fishing the standing timber with crappie jigs, there were def. A LOT of people fishing; all for trout from what I could see.. I didn't even think about crappie fishing at Amador and that's because I generally don't fish for crappie there although I'd love to give it a try when the time is right.. I USED to slay the crappie at IVR THOUGH also nice quality kokes.. The crappie fishing sure did change there the last few years or so before this drought with a lot fewer crappie being caught but still decent size slabs.. Its to bad the place has dried up, I SURE am going to miss IVR..

I'll say this about them without making too many people upset, they are big, and in very good numbers. With this weather, I'd be targeting about 15'-30'. If you find them, don't leave them. The bass and catfishing can often be outstanding there also, but that is a little ways off.

Fish well,

I don't know I'm still pulling 15 and 20 fish days from my boat there.

As far as old school baits go. Everyone still use crawlers but I see no point is using mike's cheese when pb works just fine.
