Woke up to a dusting of snow at 4000 feet and I did not want to deal with that so I went back to bed. Woke up late and was at NM by 12:30. Drove to the spots I caught nice holdovers last year, they are all 30' above water. Found a wind protected cove and soaked PB and threw a jig. Caught a nice 18" holdover on bait, missed one on a jig. Moved out to GH point for one quick "acclimated" planter (he had a decent tail and nice fins) which inhaled my bait.

The wind made it hard to fish today and I don't think they were biting well, both fish had small aquatic bugs in their stomachs and that was it. Water was very clear in the wind protected cove.

Saw about 30 deer at the lake and a dozen huge longbeards all hanging out outside of Jimtown.

Thanks for the report. I keep hoping the lake go wide open with the holdover bite like it did for me last year but who knows with this weather pattern. I just keep hoping...

I think it was warmer in the morning then it was later in the day. Still, you managed to scratch out enough for dinner. Beats working!

Thanks for the report, hoping to get over there sometime this week. Funny, I don't mind fishing in the rain, but the wind drives me nuts!!!!!

Thanks for the report! We did well by the house boats two weeks ago. Going tomorrow and still debating of banking or taking the boat and head up river.

Wind sucks buuuuut it makes trout feel more comfortable and can trigger them to bite in my experience.
I hope to take some hikes into Melones this year.

May I suggest the "Boat and Bank" method? I use my boat to troll the shore line, and I look for points or flats with deep water on either, (or both ) sides. I mark them with my GPS. I've gotten a few of these spots over the years, so now I can just go hit a couple spots until I find one that I can make a withdrawl from my Melones trout account.

I'm happy to see guys getting excited over those bitty kokes, I'll keep chasing the elusive holdovers. I get one or two now and then, but not like we did the in years past. That's ok, Im not complaining. Couple for dinner is all I need
