On Thursday of last week ICR (Indian Creek Res.) was covered with 6 to 12 inches of snow with patches of ice. 3 days of Pineapple winds and rain transofmed the lake to a lake surrounded in a sea of mud. Would the fish still be willing to bite?

Met with Jetspray and Nighthawk in the Ranchos and headed to the lake. We arrived at 0730 and set up on the east shore. We were alone on the lake and the fish were more than willing to play. The temps were in the upper 30s with periods of clouds and sun. The winds were light with periods of glass. We fished until 1300 with 44 trout to the shore between us with many more misses, LDRs, SDRs and snapped lines. Gulp was the hot bait with Orange out fishing Green. The trout were a mixture of LCT and holdover bows. It was a good day fishing with Tom and Dave. The mud wasn't really a problem because it washes off.

Great report as always sir. Looks like you folks had the place all to yourselves . Those LCT are very nice looking trout. But mostly I love the drive right up to the shore spots you guys fish.
Thanks for posting.

LDR = Long distance release.
SDR = Short distance release.

Just means your fish got away.

Gotcha. I do a lot of the SDR style release. They love to leave at the net or within ten feet of me. I reckon I am an ugly sumbtch.

Marginal. The dirt road up from Diamond Valley is a muddy mess and Airport Road from 89 is closed. If no more rain the the road will dry very fast.

So do we, there is a lot of bait thieves in the lake, I had more bait loss than catches, and the short/long loss was normal (we use small hooks 16/14 average).......Jetspray

Nighthawk and I took another shot at it today and caught 43 fish between us. A lot of bait thieves still abound and it took about 3 jars of Gulp for the day:cool2:........Jetspray

I hit it up this afternoon and took nine home. Got there a bit after two. Hell of a nice day. Was supposed to go to Pyramid and hook up with Okie, but ended up screwing up my back and didn't want to go all the way up there and maybe waste his time and mine if I couldn't hack it. This was an amusing substitute.

Nothin' better than little brooks in the fry pan imo. The little guys will be awesome with eggs and fried taters from tonight, tomorrow.

Far as the hyper intelligent dog goes you really have to watch your bait and lures while casting. Haven't hooked 'em yet, but it is coming. You know you are redneck when your dog knows what fish on, or reeling in a pole means.

Sorry about your back, sometimes a good chair is needed. Love the dog giving the fish a lookyloo. Pyramid is always there, but the weather does not always cooperate........Jetspray

Thanks cc ill do that or either use little midges/scud or chironomid just off the bottom. Hoping I make it up from diamond valley way. Never been up that road yet but it's about time I use my 4x4 this year.

I can be crowded in spots. If you get there around 0700 you are usually golden. If you are willing to walk across the dam and fish the corner and up the shore it should be only you and the fish. The Campground opens in late April. Folks camp rough up by the dam all year long and it's free.

Piece of cake.:) Most of the mud on the road should be dry. 2wd can make it.

Well that is if it does not rain anytime soon. It took about 5 lbs of quarters to get that sticky mud off the truck. I'm just sayin':Bear_fishes:........Jetspray

If it resembles snails, worms, leeches, you should be good to go. Like CC said the wind can be bad at "Windian Creek" so you might bring along a good chair and some shore fishing stuff with Gulp involved........Jetspray

Hit it up again today and it really slowed down with the wind/front. Managed four today. Two tiny with the hook way down in the gut. Two decent. Hate the little gut hooked guys. Mangles my limit size.
The neighbors and us ate all the trout last night. Those are damn good trout early in the year.

Also, does wind, cold fronts, moon phase have a real effect on the bite? If it does, in what way? It was windy and semi-overcast today and the bite was slow as hell.

Sometimes I just think it is how hungry they are after falling from the truck (launch area). They do school up and it is just a matter of how far out they are from the shoreline (temps are effective in those areas). As temps drop they tend to look for oxygen and not food.......Jetspray

If you tent it make sure you have some thick pads or a board to throw under you tent. It is rocky as hell.

Yeah and so is the bottom of the lake. When you reel in make sure you keep the rod tip up in the air and reel relatively fast or you will snag up.:vrolijk_1:....Jetspray

Went out this morning for a couple hours, windian creek as usual. Got a few cutthroat and a couple bows, one that had an amazing cheetah patterning. All in all it was great to be out, those cutts are healthy looking and all my fish went back to fight another day. Hoping some of these cutts replace the big browns we used to get out of there.
I have yet to see a bow look like this, anyone have any info? I know browns are the most genetically diverse species of trout with there spots, but not too sure about rainbows.

A DFG triploid stocker put in last fall or summer. The markings make it look almost like a Tiger Trout. Very good day. Brave man in this wind.
