Launched at noon today solo to try and catch a few perch.Had an outgo tide at the time. What a difference 2 weeks made (from being the only fishing boat to seeing a bunch today).Tried the Rock Jetty outside the harbor first but was drifting towards the rocks too fast and had some boat wakes coming over the transom. So I moved over towards the pier and managed 8 shiner perch and 4 rubberlips. All fish today were small (compared to 2 weeks ago)so I released them all to fight another day.Fished surf rigs with #6 hooks and live grass shrimp.Beautiful day on the bay hopefully can try for something more "substantial" next trip.http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj152/samp1918/3-16-14030_zps31d066c8.jpghttp://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj152/samp1918/3-16-14033_zps409ad7ea.jpg

At least you got some action. Water does look nice. I'm looking forward to halibut season. Hope it will be better than last year. How big is your boat?

I did anchor for a bit but the fish didn't bite until I slowly reeled it in.Normally Drift and cast to desired spot.Have to wait till season opens again.

You do know that perch fishing is closed from April 1 to July 31 inside the Bay. They are spawning right now, that's why many are so fat with eggs. When releasing, please be gentle with them. I see some anglers on BP throwing them from the pier, only to see them die or their eggs explode from their bellies from the pressure.

If you do want big black/rubberlips, then I know a great spot around Richmond that has always produced year-round from shore. Pm me.

Ah, my fault. I apologize if i came across harsh. Perch is one of my favorite targeted species, and I am quick to judge anglers who keep them when they know better. I've seen too many anglers lately keeping perch in my favorite spots. I can't help to be afraid that they will eventually kill the fishery in my local area.

Hi,
I didn't know that surfperch season was closed inside sf bay but open outside year round. I checked the regulations and it says surfperch is closed but shiner perch is open. I think "surfperch" include all perch except shiner perch. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks
Markz

MarkZ, you are correct. All surf perch except shiner perch is closed from April 1 to July 31 in the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. Outside the Golden Gate Bridge, they are open year round but still have the same size and catch limits.

During this period, the perch are spawning and females full of eggs.
