View Full Version : Why do we love SHAD? Top Ten

After reading about that monster striper that may or may not have been caught on the Sac and seeing all the arguments it reminds me of why I love shad!

1. No one ever says I shoulda let it go to breed.
2. No one argues the weight.
3. No one talks to boaters like crap and says they have the advantage, you can catch as many on the bank.
4. They are no different shad fisherman, there are only SHAD FISHERMAN!
5. Secret spots? Got news for everyone, they really are everywhere. Some are good for a week, then that will change....
6. Almost all shad fisherman are good people, I know over a hundred of them and only two are AHOLES. Them are good odds...
7. Cheapest gear!
8. Best weather!
9. Strongest fighter for the size!
10. Only fish I can catch consistently when they are in.....

See you guys OTW!

Matt

im debating #3

I have had plenty of run ins on the AR with guides. There is one in particular that always seems to get mad when I am nailing fish in my spot. He'll run his outboard right through my hole to spook the fish. Then he'll go sit downstream in the next hole waiting for them to settle in.

Oh and don't forget all the extra nice scenery that tends to float down on rafts!!! :moon:

Dont think shad are "above" the low lights we see on other threads. Shall I remind you of the big argument either last year or the year before in which members started questioning the amount of fish in someones photo and then claiming its waste? You shad guys just think youre so much better. LOL!!

I've only fished for them once- up in the Yuba
(some spear fishermen floated by and talked about spearing shad- is that legal to do? forget the other thread... i'm not pot stirring LOL)

but my real question is can you use them for sturgeon bait and is that legal?
thanks guys!

49erbassman
03-24-2014, 04:06 PM
I'm no expert but pretty sure they are legal to use as bait. A lot of guys use them for crab bait. I'm not 100% sure though

You can use shad as sturgeon bait as long as it's from that waterway. I assume if you're on a boat, hit Freeport when a school is there, get a few shad and then motor to your sturgeon spot. All legal to keep sized fin fish are able to be used as bait on the sac from there down to the delta. That excludes any salmonid of course.

I'm not sure about the entire frozen shad thing, since if you're catching shad on the AR, taking them home and freezing them , and then using them in the delta....it gets iffy since I've heard and been told that shad isn't legally a gamefish but it still does have a 25 fish limit. Like I said, before, I'd run them fresh if you did want to try it.

I really need to hook my first shad. I was so pissed at myself for ignoring the run as it was tapering off during the summer. If anyone hits freeport anytime soon or has any success on the sac around there, keep me informed or PM me or whatever. I don't want to wait until May for the AR to heat up lol.

Somebody on here said shad is a "mother-in-law" fish. i couldn't agree more. if yours have the patience to pick the meat using a fork, put it in a blender with baby dills, salt and pepper, and a little bit of hot chili pepper for some kick, then blend it up; pad it to the size of a tofu block.

cut it into one inch thick pieces, and fry it in olive olive til golden brown in med heat....best fish cake ever!!

very time consuming but well worth it.

I'll throw one out as well to pass the time until they arrive.....

Fillet shad and season to your liking.... bake for 6-7 hours in a covered pan between 200-250 degrees. After you take the shad out of oven, check too see if bones are soft (they should be how sardines in a can are). Take your pan and place it in the fridge. The shads natural oil will make the fish harden up a bit.... take a spatula and carefully remove a fillet.... place on plate and rub egg, then proceed to carefully roll into favorite fish fry.... get the grease hot and place fillet in.... cook until batter turns golden brown.....;)
