This will be my first season on the salt for salmon I have a question about how for is your dodger from your anchovie bait holder? The dodgers I have our all 8 and 9 inch gvf dodgers

At the ISE they suggested having the bait at 3 to 4 times the length if the flasher/dodger back. But I'm only passing on what the pro guides suggested, as I'm new to ocean salmon fishing myself.

In Oregon we used a 4-6 foot leader behind the flashers.

Good luck,

3-4' will get the job done. Or you can run your dodger off the downrigger ball and stack bait above it.

Last year, early season, My wife and I ran our Pro Troll Watermelon Apex without flashers. They call this running them "naked". We caught fish when everyone around us wasn't! Everyone had their stuff down deep, we trolled in 80 to 100 Ft. deep with our down rigger set at 35 Ft deep. Knocked the snot out of the fish every time!

2-3 ft bud.

I'm with BigK on this. I troll 4 downriggers on my boat with 3 guest and have more success with the 2'-3' length leaders.

Not an area I know much about but it sounds like the range is 2-6' the 3-4x dodger size seems to fall into this bracket as well. I assume like freshwater if you want more action run it shorter - less action run it longer.

perhaps I can lend my thoughts, after fishing Salmon for 25 years commercial, I/we use exclusively Hot Spots 11" Red/silver mylar insert, we use 27" hoochie tail or flasher to the bait, gives action to attract, and right speed to catch, some guys like it longer, seldom many like them shorter, the general rule is 2 1/2 x flasher length. 2.2-3.0 MPH, and remember to clean your catch, bleed immediately clean withing 20 min then ICE, improves table quality and promotes shelf life.
go get em.

May I inquire as to what size Apex you used?

I use 5 or 6 inch apex without a flasher.Have had good luck. I used the 11 inch hotspots with a
22" leader and a hoochie and 5/0 or 6/0 hook with a piece of anchovy or piece of squid for flavor. That worked for me.

You just got handed a lifetime of experience from CaptDarl. People would pay for that info. Good luck on the water.

yesterday i got both my DR's and bait heads ready to bait up and send down... then remembered the bait was still in the freezer at home. got all my ice jugs, my waters and my lunch but forgot the bait.. i left all my hoochies on the bench thinking i would just run bait heads. .. my friend was looking at me like are you kidding me.. . i said we don't need stinking bait.. the spoons are here.. ran 2 riggers with large green/chrome sling blade with 1 blue/chrome and one green/chrome crok 4/5 feet leaders.. had one early then trolled and trolled got another then a double in less then 5 min and was done..
