Literally, oil spills can damage the hearts of fishes for several years. It is more damaging and longer term than once thought. Here are some reports that the science community is finding out:

Interesting, looks like that residual oil in the water continues to kill/hurt fish for a long time.

Next time Exxon or whoever spills should be fined even more heavily for long term fisheries damage. I hope there are no more spills, but seems like it's inevitable.
