Went out for about 2 hours . Quick trip from 1 to 3 between plans for the day. Managed 5 landed. Had 3 throw the hook jumping and missed maybe 5 bites. Wish I could have stayed later but that's life and I got some for the smoker. I'm exited about the results this early and it's the first trip out. Nice job! I too went out for just a quick 2 hours today for bass and only got 1 but he was I believe my 2nd biggest ever. (Didn't have a scale). Gonna go post a pic and brief comment on the Bass forum.

Nice! I've been wanting to go pursue Shad but I've been occupied fishing other species due to seeing the water clarity of the AR. Is it clear yet? or is it still blown out due to the flows from last week? My weak point is stained water... I keep doubting myself if fish will ever find my lure or bait. If it's clear, I might be out there this week then!

It's not clear, it's not from the blow out either. It cleared up then the heat made it green.
Algae bloom of some sort. It looks stained in a sort.

It's decently clear. Last nights rain might have changed that a bit. Maybe not though as it didn't rain too long. It was clear enough that they found my tiny jig!!

I was wondering if you guys are having to use bobbers where you are fishing?

saizo
05-06-2014, 01:33 PM
Depends where your fishing and how fast the drift. Oh and if there's lots of weeds too then a bobber helps.

49erbassman
05-06-2014, 01:43 PM
Depends on where I'm fishing. Low flow deep areas I fish a bobber. If I have decent flow just a split shot. I have caught them both ways so far this year but bobber has been more productive, probably due to the areas I fish.

Last year I mainly used a bobber. I've caught everything drifting with split shots this year though.

how much leader for slip shot and how much for bobber in most cases... general question but thanks for any info ive been getting out there a lot and nothing yet, oh well just keep on fishing

My understanding is that shad look up for food, so it depends on the depth/flow and where they're holding. I've been told shad have a very small "strike zone" and if you're not at the correct depth, you won't catch them. Try working different depths by adjusting your bobber/leader. The spot I've had the most luck with is probably between 6-8 feet deep with a decent flow, so I throw out a bobber with about a 5 1/2 - 6" leader.

I've caught all mine on bobber, no luck drifting split shots yet. I'm no pro though so either technique should work if you're doing it correctly and using it in the proper water. Faster/shallow water seems it would be best for split shot technique, but you don't want to be bouncing off the bottom too much as they feed by looking up.

I adjust my bobber after 10 casts no hits..... Do that all day.

+1 on that or either adding or removing split shot this year so far for drifting. I find when it's early and the numbers are low drifting finds them better. Gonna try again tmrw. Want to tonight and there is a slight chance I may. Will report if I do go

So the float down on the kayaks last Friday yielded no shad, saw a few striper. They let out about 1000 cfs at 2:00 AM on Friday morning so everything was blown out and visibility was low. Should be a good sign of things to come though.

Went back out to verona Saturday and my girl got her first shad, plus 2 more. I got 1 and my buddy got 1, then this happened:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzon5P9skK8&feature=youtu.be

Didn't land it, would've been a miracle to have done so since I'm sure it was snagged.

Yeah I definitely haven't been on the AR much this shad season. Last year this time I was killing them in the barbless section. I'm hitting the eastern sierras for trout this weekend and will try for shad again next week

Fished for three hours with my buddy and about 6 others. Only three fish landed. I had about 10 hookups but could not get anything to stick. Evening bite is tough with all the swimmers around. About 8:30 stripers started chasing shad all over the place. It was pretty cool but couldn't get em to grab a swimbait.

I'll be back after them Sunday and Monday morning.

And you guys didn't believe me when they were coming up the river in February. :)

I'm joking, but still, the season doesn't look like it's going to take off. I've hit the AR a few times and haven't seen any pulled in and haven't even had a strike for my effort.

The fish know that they have limited space. I wouldn't want to be compressed in a room with limited oxygen with thousands of people like me in it either lol. Going back to the ocean to get eaten by dolphins.

His buddy was above drifting into the honey hole and picking em off. I put some in the cooler for em. The way things are going I'm glad I got a few in the freezer! Hit the barbless section for about two hours. First hour nothing then it came alive and was fish on every other cast. Even managed three in a row. Lost more than I landed but it was fun

Landed my largest AR shad and she was a pig. Best fighting shad I ever caught. It peeled drag for a good 10 seconds straight twice lol
